Color Marketing Group®

Color Marketing Group® (CMG) is The Premier International Association for Color Design Professionals®. Our mission is creating accurate and relevant color and trend forecast information by connecting global color professionals in their shared passion.

A not-for-profit international association of color design professionals, Color Marketing Group® is a forum for the exchange of all things color. Members represent a broad spectrum of designers, marketers, color scientists, consultants, educators, and artists.

Since 1962, CMG members have been turning a shared passion for color, into business opportunities across all industries. Our members come together at local and international color forecasting events to interpret, create, forecast, and select colors with the goal of enhancing manufactured goods and services. By collaborating, we better identify the direction of color and design trends. Then, interpret that information across industries.

You live in color and so do we. Its influences are everywhere, the environment, social issues, changing political climates – they all impact color in one industry, which have a reverberating effect on another. We believe the only way to stay competitive within such constant change, is by harnessing each other’s endless flow of knowledge and understanding.

Color, Materials & Finish Guest Speakers

INTRODUCTION TO THE APPLICATION OF COLOR, MATERIALS & FINISH

with Paula Leonard, industry leading color, material and finish designer and trend visionary

A comprehensive Color, Materials and Finish (CMF) strategy has gained more importance across the past decade, with product design companies increasingly searching for experts to specifically address this need. However, CMF expertise is not always taught in design school, and is often learned through experience.

This workshop focuses on a beginner's need to understand steps to apply CMF themes to a product, with a specific focus on the customer's wants and needs. The workshop will be a fun, interactive session, with breakout teams working to develop a CMF Strategy and a Color Map for a product that targets a Customer persona along with addressing one of those 'whammies' you always get when working within a product development environment.

The CMF application workshop will start with a short lesson on things to consider when developing a CMF plan for a product, before breaking into small groups.

This workshop is targeted at CMF Beginners but could just be a fun exercise for those that are more knowledgeable (and those with experience may enjoy also leading and helping to teach the others in their group.)

Key Learning Points:

  • Key basics to consider when choosing how to determine the CMF for a product (i.e.. Customer influences, design attributes, product read, touch/tactility, etc.)
  • Key basics to consider when creating an explanation/justification of why a particular CMF was chosen.

BRINGING PRAGMATISM AND DISRUPTION FROM THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY TO CMF ACROSS ALL INDUSTRIES - VISION & PERSPECTIVE FROM A COLOR, MATERIALS & FINISH DESIGNER

with Guest Speaker - Fabien Darche, Strategic Marketing Manager Americas for Merck Coatings

Color, Materials & Finish design is a complex domain where designers are dealing not only with color but with the diverse characteristics of materials. Although the discipline has been mainly developed in the automotive industry it is now present in other sectors like architecture, but with slightly different approaches.

This presentation will take you on a journey from the origins of this profession to its present-day. Using the automotive industry as an example, you will gain a better understanding of the fields of application as well as valuable insights into the tools of a CMF designer and where they draw their inspiration from. The presentation will focus on color, with a fascinating glimpse into the history of pigments and how they can add complexity to color. Fabien will also showcase the possibilities of using more effects in CMF projects, opening up a world of potential for innovative proposals in the future.

HOW TO CREATE COLOR HARMONIES WITH THE NCS COLOUR SYSTEM

with Guest Speaker, Karl Johan Bertilsson:

In this presentation, you'll learn the color design principles and the fundamentals of how to easily create harmonizing color palettes.

You will gain new inspiration on how to combine colors. You'll learn more about color areas and how you can use them smartly to evoke different emotions. You'll get insight and learn how to handle the basic color design principles that make the color change, depending on the surroundings of light and material.

Guest Speaker, Karl Johan Bertilsson originally studied Applied Linguistics and ran his own language school in Mexico for 11 years before returning to his native country, Sweden, in 1977 and switched to the color language of NCS, becoming responsible for establishing NCS worldwide. Since then, his full focus has been to support industries with color solutions from architect and design communities, to universities and colleges. Karl first delivered a color trend workshop to CMG members in 2007 and since then he has worked continuously with color trends globally, with full responsibility for NCS colour trends.

In 2016 he established his own design company MRKRL AB, offering design solutions of interiors, products, and branding where the aesthetics, the function, and meaning of color always have a central function. His clients are mainly based in China, Europe, and Russia. All of this while still consulting for NCS Colour AB as a Creative Director.

Describing Color with the Colour Literacy Project: CHROMO - A foundational colour sorting set

The Colour Literacy Project (CLP) is a joint educational initiative between the Inter-Society Colour Council (ISCC) and the International Colour Association (AIC/Association Internationale de la Couleur). We are revitalizing colour education, and developing materials for teachers of all levels based on the best available peer-reviewed research on colour. Our approach is experiential, focussed around the four foundational cornerstones for 21st century colour literacy: Experiencing, Describing, Perceiving and Using Colours.

The ability to accurately see and describe colours with all their variations is a key element in foundational colour knowledge. Too often the terms colour and hue are used synonymously, and our experience of colour is reduced to a single dimension. We developed CHROMO, a digital colour sorting set, specifically designed to expand the way we see and describe colours, as well as introduce three-dimensional colour models as a foundational concept.

Join CLP team members Maggie Maggio and Robin Kingsburgh in a series of fun colour sorting exercises, designed to take you from 2D to 3D colour and introduce core concepts for learning about colour in the 21st century.

Robin Kingsburgh is a trained astronomer and painter. Her background in science comes from the University of Toronto (B.Sc. 1988) and University College London (Ph.D. in Astronomy, 1992). She worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Baja California at the University of Mexico from 1993-1996. Her painting experience comes from studies in Canada, France and the U.K, and has paralleled her scientific development. Robin has longstanding interests in the intersections of art, science and education, and currently teaches various natural science courses at York University in Toronto, including Understanding Colour, The History of Astronomy, and The Nature of Time. She has curated numerous shows and events in the Toronto area, featuring artwork inspired by the ideas and methodologies of science. She is President of the Colour Research Society of Canada and a member of the Ontario Society of Artists.

Maggie Maggio is a designer, artist, and art educator who has studied, taught, and worked with color for over forty years. Her personal explorations into the science of light and pigments led to the creation of workshops for artists and designers who want to incorporate the latest research in color science into their creative practice. As a member of the board of directors of the US Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC) and co-chair of the International Color Association Study Group on Color Education, Maggie focuses on bridging between the art, science, and industry of color and advancing color literacy for the twenty-first century. She is the current chair of the Joint International Color Association/ISCC Color Literacy Project, advocating for the integration of art and science in color education programs worldwide.

Design for Identity and The New Perspective in Color

Jessica Bantom, Author, Speaker, Consultant, Designer

"The Design DEIB Consultant"

Jessica Bantom, The Design DEIB Consultant, is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging practitioner, interior design consultant, and speaker whose mission is to help designers increase their cultural competence so they can create in ways that honor humanity. Jessica is a business-minded creative whose professional experience spans marketing, IT and management consulting, and startup leadership. A skilled consultant with over 20 years of experience, her roster of clients includes renowned universities, global professional associations, and government agencies. Jessica is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Marymount University and holds a Master's in interior design as well as a combination of a variety of certifications in DEI, change management, design thinking, coaching, and facilitation.

Whether designing systems, strategies, experiences, or spaces, the common theme throughout her unique career has been care for people. As a big picture thinker, one question she is known to ask is, "How will this project or initiative affect everyone involved?"

Philly-born, DC-based, and globally engaged, Jessica's appreciation for cultural difference is rooted in her early education in a desegregating elementary school and diverse public school classrooms. She has often been told by her clients and audiences that her superpower is making hard topics approachable and accessible with authenticity. She strives to help her audiences normalize challenging conversations about identity and take actions – big and small – that create meaningful outcomes for historically excluded people.

Andreea Hartea, Founder of RAH Colours Studio presents "The New Perspective in Color"

Color has always been seen as an element of reality that is both stable and, at the same time, uncertain. Stable due to its omnipresent nature and uncertain because its perception varies from person to person. Is it possible to measure the unique meaning it can have for each individual? Can we understand where a color can fall on our and our clients scale of preferences and aversions? Until some time ago, these considerations were not even thought of because measuring subjectivity seemed elusive. However, thanks to the progress of neuroscience and neuroaesthetics in the last twenty years, it is now possible to do so.

Andreea Hartea was born in Romania and currently lives and between Milano and Bucarest where in early 2020, she established RAH Colour Consulting Studio collaborating with architecture firms, interior designers, and international companies.

She studied Visual Arts at NABA and completed a two-year program in Dynamic Hypnosis and Analogical Psychology at the CID_CNV Institute in Milan. To deepen her expertise, she pursued additional courses on color by "Max Luscher," attended seminars on meditative and hypnotic practices, while she researched topics like neuromarketing and neuroeconomics.

Her research primarily draws inspiration from psychology and consciousness, focusing on the mechanisms of unconscious and emotional perception. Her fascination with the human experience fuels her exploration of the inner universe as a means to comprehend our surroundings.

She derives great satisfaction from assisting individuals in their daily lives and uncovering the underlying reasons behind their experiences using the power of color.

Her primary objective is to educate people on approaching color from a more intimate, authentic, and conscious standpoint, acknowledging that color affects each individual in a very unique manner. Currently, she is devoted to promoting the concept "subjectivity of color" as she has been privileged to deliver lectures to prominent companies and international platforms such as Edison, PPG, Archiproducts, and TedxRoma.

Having moved from theory to practical application, she developed the RAH Colours test, which aids professionals closely engaged with end clients in addressing the challenging question: "What color should we choose?" Whether it involves materials, products, or surfaces, this question invariably arises in interior design and often proves a point of frustration for both professionals and clients alike.

She provides guidance on implementing this methodology, and currently works on creating a platform that will provide professionals with their own personal color consultant, eliminating the need for additional training.

Moreover, she collaborates with studios and boutique agencies specializing in brand identities, particularly for small-scale brands.
