Different countries have different income tax treatments on individual/ personal income tax. Malaysia adopts a territorial scope of taxation and the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board ("MIRB") has introduced the self-assessment system with effect from the Year of Assessment ("YA") 2004. Under the self-assessment system, an assessment is deemed to be made by the tax authorities on the day the return is submitted.


Therefore, it is pertinent for expatriate employees to understand and comply with the Malaysian tax law.
