The Equity Imperative: Reflections on Leading for Equity in International Schools


Join us for our AAIE Equity Conversation. We are thrilled to have two esteemed international school leaders guiding today's discussion: Dr. Nneka Johnson (International Educational Consultant) and Dr. Jennifer Beckwith (Founding Director of American United School of Kuwait). Joining them is their special guest, Elizabeth Imende, Executive Director of AISA (Association of International Schools in Africa).


In today's conversation, we invite school leaders to reflect deeply on the challenges and opportunities that come with fostering equitable environments within diverse educational settings. Attendees will explore key areas within a school's culture and ecosystem where equity plays a crucial role.

    Dr. Nneka Johnson is an advocate for international education. She believes in the power of servant leadership, design thinking/innovation, global engagement/collaboration, mentorship, and Generative AI. Nneka strives to empower school leaders to use innovative methodologies to make a positive impact within their diverse communities.

    In 2023, Nneka became the first Fellow at the Council of International Schools (CIS). Before joining CIS, she spent five years at the International School of Dakar (ISD), where she held the position of Director of Innovation and Strategic Development. In her senior leadership role at ISD she was responsible for a number of school strategic initiatives. She currently serves on the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) Board of Trustees and the AISA Professional Learning Design Team. She is also an Edsafe Women in AI Fellow.

    Currently, Nneka is an international educational consultant who is passionate about supporting human-centered problem solving.

    Jennifer Beckwith, Ph.D.

    Founding Director of American United School of Kuwait

    Jennifer Beckwith has worked in K-12 education for over 40 years with international leadership experiences that span nine countries, including principalships in the Netherlands, UK, Norway, Belgium, Germany, and Japan. As a Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent, she oversaw schools in Italy, Turkey, Bahrain, Spain, and Portugal. She founded The American United School of Kuwait.

    Jennifer holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Beckwith served on the Board of Trustees of AAIE and as a Commissioner for Middle States Association. Dr. Beckwith is also one of the founding members of the Diversity Collaborative.

    Born to Kenyan and Ugandan parents, Elizabeth Imende did her early schooling in Kenya before emigrating with her family to the United States. She holds a B.A. in English from Wake Forest University and an Ed.M. in Teaching and Learning from Harvard University and has worked in the education sector for over twenty years.

    Her experience spans the globe, having worked for schools and organisations in Latin America, Asia, Europe, the US, and East and Southern Africa. As the founder and director of Advancing Educators, Elizabeth has a proven track record of supporting educators and administrators in improving their practice, and developing strategic plans. She has a passion for DEIJ and advancing women in leadership positions.

    Having been a long-time professional learning facilitator for AISA, Elizabeth took up the role of AISA’s Executive Director in July 2024.
