The Africa Group of the Chicago Consular Corps and the African Diaspora Sixth Region of Illinois are organizing the commemoration of Africa Day 2021. This event aims to highlight the importance of Africa and its contributions to the community of nations. Africa Day will create a platform for exchanging ideas, establishing partnerships, and showcasing Africa as an open continent for business and tourism. The celebration will also be located within the context of Agenda 2063, Africa's blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future.

Africa Day was first held in 1963 in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa when 32 countries formed the Organisation of Africa Unity (OAU), now the African Union. It is marked every year on May 25. Since then, 23 additional countries have joined the African Union, a body of 55 countries. Nowadays, Africa Day is a national holiday in some countries and is widely celebrated by Africans worldwide in Africa and the diaspora.

Africa Day is intended to celebrate and acknowledge the successes of the Organization of African Unity (OAU, now the AU) from its creation on May 25, 1963, in the fight against colonialism and apartheid, as well as the progress that Africa has made while reflecting upon the common challenges that the continent faces in a global environment.

The Africa Group of Consular Corps and the African Diaspora Sixth Region of Illinois in Chicago are celebrating African Day with the aim at creating and increasing awareness of the positive developments in Africa and the opportunities for doing business.
