Dr. Teresa DeFrancesco Professor of Cardiology and ICU Critical Care at North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Terri DeFrancesco is a Professor in Cardiology and Critical Care with tenure at the North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, in Raleigh, NC. She is also the Assistant Department Head in the Department of Clinical Sciences and Small Animal Focus Leader. Dr. DeFrancesco completed her DVM degree at Cornell University in 1991, followed by a small animal rotating internship at Virginia Tech and residencies in Cardiology and Emergency/Critical Care both at the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State University. She is double-boarded in Cardiology and Emergency and Critical Care and has been on faculty at NC State since 1995. She has been the recipient of numerous teaching and clinical awards including the Cobblestone TAGS Faculty Excellence Award in Cardiology Endowment, two-time recipient of the Pfizer Norden Teaching award, six-time recipient of the Clinician of the year award, and the NCVMA NCSU Clinician of the year award. Dr. DeFrancesco is an author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications of clinically relevant research studies, clinical reviews, case series and case reports and 16 book chapters. She is a nationally and internationally recognized speaker with over 200 hours of continuing education in clinical cardiology and emergency medicine. Dr. DeFrancesco’s areas of interest include improving the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure in dogs and cats, use of point of care ultrasound in emergency settings, cardiac emergency management including arrhythmias management, pacemaker, and ventilator therapy.

Dr. Turandot Saul Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Dr. Turandot Saul is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine. For the past years, she has served as an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospitals. After completing her residency in Emergency Medicine at New York University/Bellevue Hospital, she continued Emergency Medicine training at St. Luke’s Roosevelt as an Emergency Ultrasound Fellow. Within one year of graduation Dr. Saul was promoted to Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Director. July 1, 2014, Dr. Saul was promoted to Emergency Ultrasound Division Director. A dedicated educator, Dr. Saul teaches bedside ultrasound to 2 fellows, 42 residents and many medical students each year. Dr. Saul is proud to state that almost every attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai St. Luke‘s/Roosevelt is credentialed in at least 2 ultrasound applications; many are credentialed in 6 or 7 applications. Dr. Saul is the author of over 40 peer reviewed journal publications and an editor on the imaging textbook, “Essential Emergency Imaging” published by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins in 2011. Dr. Saul reviews two academic journals and was given the distinction of “Distinguished Reviewer,” by the Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine this year. Dr. Saul has co-directed the Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Annual Regional Ultrasound Symposium, a live symposium offering 3.5 CME credit hours with approximately 250 attendees for the past 7 years. After the lecture portion of the symposium, a research forum is held, which includes oral presentations, as well as a moderated poster session allowing local ultrasound fellows to showcase their research and obtain feedback from experts in the field. Dr. Saul directs a quarterly city-wide ultrasound grand rounds at Mount Sinai Roosevelt where local ultrasound providers come together to review a topic in a round table discussion format. This affords a wonderful opportunity to collaborate and share ideas between institutions.

Dr. Alex Blutinger Emergency & Critical Care Veterinarian at BluePearl Veterinary Partners Dr. Alex Blutinger is a board certified criticalist at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in New York City. He obtained his BS in Biology, Neuroscience, and Italian at Brandeis University before obtaining his veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 2015. He completed a rotating internship at BluePearl Veterinary Partners in New York City, followed by a small animal emergency and critical care residency at the Animal Medical Center in NYC. His particular clinical interests include mechanical ventilation, toxicities, and polytrauma. Outside of veterinary medicine, he is a dual national of the US and Italy, and spent many years living in Italy, where he developed a passion for Italian culture; cooking, speaking the language, and European football. Alex collaborates with his brother as a DJ and music producer, where they perform in NYC.

His clinical interests include simulation training, telehealth, and health policy. He has many first-author articles and publications on the effects of COVID-19 and population health, now serving on several national Committees for the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). He is a better surfer than his brother Alex and superstitiously watches every New York Knicks game.

Dr. Joel Weltman Senior Veterinarian at the Animal Medical Center Dr. Weltman, a former intern at the Animal Medical Center, rejoined the AMC staff as a member of the emergency and critical care team in 2017. After completing his internship, Dr. Weltman went on to achieve board certification following residency at Cornell University. Following residency, Dr. Weltman chose to pursue his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, investigating the neuroplastic control of breathing as it pertains to sleep apnea and spinal cord injury. As a member of the emergency and critical care team, Dr. Weltman has spearheaded and supported several research projects and currently holds numerous intramural and extramural grants for ongoing studies. Outside of work Dr. Weltman is an active member within the NYC choral community and spends time with his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Brisket.

Dr. Kelly Hall Associate Professor of Emergency and Critical Care at James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Colorado State University Dr. Kelly Hall is one of the faculty members who joined the critical care services team in September 2019. In addition to teaching, and working with highly functioning teams, she also has passion for improving trauma patient care through collaborative clinical and translational research and chairs the ACVECC Veterinary Committee on Trauma (VetCOT). She was a faculty member at the University of Minnesota for 14 years where she also earned her DVM, emergency and critical care training for board certification and master's in clinical research. More recently, Dr. Hall took a non-linear path, and taught high school science and coached basketball and lacrosse in an effort to inspire the next generation of scientists and leaders. Primary drivers of Dr. Hall’s philosophy, whether on the clinic floor, coaching on the basketball court or lacrosse field, in the classroom or through research collaborations, include Angela Duckworth’s research on grit, Carol Dweck’s research on growth mindset and John Wooden’s "pyramid of success."

Dr. Kevin Hu Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Dr. Kevin Hu is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and the Co-Director of Emergency Ultrasound at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Additionally, he practices clinically at multiple other Mount Sinai Health System hospitals and urgent care centers as well as Elmhurst Hospital Center. He is currently a member of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Admissions Committee. Dr. Hu graduated from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine. He completed residency in Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai during which he was a Harvard Macy Scholar, a MERC Scholar, and a member of the Student Advisement Task Force under the Council of Residency Directors. Subsequently, he continued training at Mount Sinai to complete an Ultrasound Fellowship, served as the vice chair of the Emergency Medicine Residents Association Ultrasound Committee, and was the recipient of two national awards from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine: the Emergency Ultrasound Fellow Research Award and the Best Cross-Sectional Research Study. His academic/professional interests are point-of-care ultrasound, medical education, resident mentorship, physician financial literacy, and clinical performance optimization.

Dr. Kimberly Joseph Chair, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Subcommittee of the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons Kimberly Joseph, MD, FACS, FCCM is a critical care surgery specialist in Chicago, IL. She is the current chair of the ATLS Subcommittee of the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. She was the Division Chair for Trauma Critical Care and Prevention in the Department of Trauma and Burns at the John H Stroger Hospital of Cook County in Chicago. She is a past Chair of the Patient/Family Support Committee of the Society of Critical Care Medicine and a past Chair of the Surgical Section of the National Medical Association. In addition to AAST, the NMA, and SCCM, she is a member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons, the Association of Women Surgeons, and the American Public Health Association.
