Fostering gender diversity and inclusion goes beyond simply having an equal proportion of genders in the workforce. Through this training, participants will gain a more comprehensive understanding of gender diversity and the proper behaviors that will eliminate discrimination, harassment, and biases within the organization.


The scope of the first part of this workshop focuses on the concepts under the umbrella term, LGBTQIA+ and explores the aspects of gender bias and inequality the LGBT community face. The discussion would help participants understand and develop sensitivity toward the diverse spectrum of sexual identities in the workplace. The second part explores gender sensitivity and provides direction on practices to cultivate a gender-inclusive culture, including ways to incorporate it into workplace communication.

Course Outline:

Day 1: LGBT 101 Outline

  • What is LGBT? (process of transitioning; discussing in detail the L-G-B-T)
  • Stigma (insults and microaggression, disrespect, denial of equal humanity)
  • LGBT and their well-being (understanding gender discrimination and its impact on one's well-being)
  • Building an LGBT-inclusive workplace


Day 2: Gender Sensitivity

  • Sex vs Gender (understanding gender biases in our language)
  • Gender Stereotypes
  • Gender-Fair Language
  • Advocating for the use of gender-fair language
  • Promoting gender-fair discourse practices

Facilitators:

Beatriz A. Torre, is an assistant professor at the UP Diliman Department of Psychology and currently serves as the co-chairperson of the Psychological Association of the Philippines LGBT Psychology Special Interest Group (PAP LGBT Psychology SIG). She is also part of the core team of Lunas Collective, a feminist, volunteer-powered chat service for Filipinos seeking support related to gender-based violence and reproductive health. Her master's thesis on experiences of everyday sexism among Filipino women of diverse sexual orientations was recognized by the British Psychological Society – Psychology of Sexualities with a Post-Graduate Award and by the Psychological Association of the Philippines with an Outstanding Graduate Thesis Award. Her research interests include everyday forms of stigma and prejudice, friendships across sexual orientation, and exercise participation and motivation.

Apryl Mae C. Parcon, Ph.D., R.Psy is a developmental psychologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Philippines - Diliman. She also used to be the head of the Developmental Psychology Graduate Program. Now, she is serving as the Department's Graduate Program Coordinator, overseeing the different areas of concentration in the Psychology Graduate Program. Prior to pandemic, she used to co-host and co-produce Psych O'Clock Habit, an educational radio program airing at DZUP 1602, which features psychological concepts and issues, and provides commentaries on psychological events using a more culturally sensitive and evidence-based approach. Her research interests focus more on the dynamics of family and child development, culture and societal
