The IRD has been present in Laos since 1995. The Representation develops related research projects in the field of environmental sciences and agronomy, health as well as in the human and social sciences. IRD representation in Laos is part of a regional approach aimed at supporting and consolidating the development and structuring of scientific research. The specificity of the French institution is to develop fair scientific partnerships between the IRD and local establishments such as universities, research institutes and hospitals. Many bilateral research programs are developed between Laotian and French researchers. The IRD develops interdisciplinary research projects with its Laotian partners on a local or even regional scale. Its objective is to co-build sustainable scientific activities in order to improve the acquisition of knowledge on the Laotian territory. In collaboration with its partners, the Representation also trains students and young researchers.
