Senator Briggs Hopson Senator for District 23 Briggs Hopson serves as the Mississippi State Senator for District 23, which is composed of Wanen,Issaquena, Madison and Yazoo Counties. He is Chairman of the Appropriations Committee and he is also a member of the committees on Education, Judiciary "A", and Public Health, among others. He has served as Chairman of Judiciary "A'o and the Energy Committees, Vice-Chairman of the Public Health Committee, and as Chairman of several sub-committees in the Senate. Hopson is a national Uniform Law Commissioner, an Executive Committee member of the Energy Council and the National Conference of State Legislatures, where he previously served as a Co-Chair of the Committee on Lawo Criminal Justice and Public Safety. He has served on the Governing Board of the Southern Legislative Conference and as a Trusteee and Executive Council member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). He currently serves on the Legislative Advisory Council for the Southern Regional Education Board. Hopson is also a partner in the Vicksburg, Mississippi, law firm of Teller, Hopson & Schrader,LLP, practicing in the areas of litigation, business law, school law, healthcare law, among other areas. He received a B.B.A. in 1987 and his J.D. in 1990 from the University of Mississippi. He is a former Adjunct Professor of Law at the Mississippi College School of Law. He is past President of The Mississippi Bar, the Mississippi Young Lawyers, and the Warren County Bar. Hopson is a Fellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation. He is also a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, the International Association of Defense Counsel, Council of School Attorneys, and the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. Hopson is peer-review rated "AV Preeminent" by Martindale-Hubbell lawyer-rating agency and has been selected as a Mid-South Super Lawyer in Business Litigation and an Elite Lawyer in the South. Hopson has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of United Way and the Good Shepherd Community Center in Vicksburg. He has also held various leadership positions for the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and Mission Mississippi, among other philanthropic organizations. He presently serves as a Mississippi District Chancellor for the United Methodist Church and has served as Administrative Board Chairman andLay Leader for Crawford Street United Methodist Church in Vicksburg. He and his wife, Alison (Ali), are parents of three children, Liam, Walt and Jane.
