OSAEC is a modern-day human trafficking and transnational issue that affects the Philippines, Australia, and many other countries in the world. The Department of Justice Office of Cybercrime (DOJ-OOC) in 2017 received 45,645 cybertips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The figure ballooned to 600,000 in 2018. Cybertips reportedly spiked in the Philippines by a whopping 264.63% from March 1 to May 24, 2020 – compared to the same period last year. DOJ-OOC recorded 279,166 incidents of OSAEC nationwide, as the Government began imposing various levels of lockdowns. This figure is 202,605 higher than the 76,561 recorded from March 1 to May 24, 2019.

    Niño Gerardo Lasin is a Child Protection (Advocacy) Officer from UNICEF, specifically for its SaferKidsPH Programme.
