Event Details

The humble maize kernel is often taken for granted but despite many socio-political and climate-related challenges, South Africa annually produces sufficient maize for human and animal consumption. Maize is one of just 20 plant species providing 90% of our food, with three – wheat, maize and rice – accounting for 60% of all calories consumed globally. Maize is the backbone of food security in South Africa, consistently supporting millions of people and animals.

Join us for a fascinating glimpse of the maize value chain, discussing how the maize kernel moves from cultivar selection to foods, feeds and even medicines such as cough syrups.

We delve into presentations "The Amazing Maize Value Chain Story – South Africa's Hidden Superpower" and "From the Grain in the Ground to the World as We Know It – Utilising Maize to Manufacture Ingredients that Touch Lives Daily"—followed by a Lab Tour!
