Health and Safety is our Top Priority
Health and Safety is our Top Priority
Message from the WiFA Management - Bonnie So

Those prefect, clear, sunny days when the warmth hits your shoulders and the glare is too much for your eyes. They are back - just skewed a little differently.

As we have seen in these past few days, Hong Kong is experiencing a new wave of infections. The government is warning that this third wave is by far the most serious, primarily because the authorities are unable to trace many of the patients’ source of infection. Social distancing measures have been tightened, local schools have closed to start summer break earlier, and we should expect further restrictions if the current situation does not improve. WiFA members’ health and safety continue to be our top priority. We will continue to monitor the situation closely, and based on government directives, we will be ready to take the necessary precautions as required. Please stay tuned for any last minute changes to events that you have signed up for.
We definitely live in challenging times, so please make sure to stay abreast of the latest developments in Hong Kong, and take all the necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy.

Meanwhile we are open to new ideas and suggestions so please reach out to Benedicte Nolens, Bonnie Ohri, Bonnie So or the Steerco team directly. We look forward to hearing from you.

WiFA is Excited to Launch the First Internship Programme
Welcome WiFA Summer Interns

Over the past seven months, WiFA has embraced new ways of working within our daily schedules. We hosted 11 events (10 virtual events including The Women’s Forum, Internal Steering Meetings and our Q1 Advisory Board Meeting, and one in-person Mentor and Mentee Cocktail Reception).

We are taking another new step forward. This summer, WiFA is excited to launch an internship programme for the very first time. Thanks Bonnie So for leading this initiative.

We welcome Chiara Jeong from Hong Kong International School and Alice Lau from Foothill College, California. Chiara and Alice will focus on improving our online communication strategy and work on the new Spotlight Series.

True culture shines in times of crisis. We should ensure that their summer intern experience at WiFA reflects our core values to diversity and inclusion in our community. I am sure that you will be hearing from Chiara and Alice soon.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to them and with your help, we look forward to making their internship fruitful.

WiFA Thought Leadership Series - "Love in Finance"

July 23, Thursday 6:30 - 7:30pm Zoom Webinar

Join us by registering here

All of us look for love in life but many of us do not believe we can find love in finance. At least that was what Amy thought when she left finance after a two-decade long career to join an NGO. After 4 years at an NGO, she surprisingly returns to finance. Is love really possible in finance?

Amy Fong is the Chief Operating Officer at FountainVest Partners (Asia). FountainVest Partners was founded in 2007 and is a leading China-focused private equity fund headquartered in Hong Kong. Prior to joining FountainVest in late 2019, Amy worked for 4 years as the CEO of Save the Children Hong Kong, the HK member of a global movement that works in 120 countries focusing on the most marginalized and deprived children. She will provide us with her insights on love in finance later this month.

If you have further questions or suggestions, please reach out to our WiFA Thought Leadership co-Chair Rebecca Sin .

Finding your Neutrality within a challenging time – Meditation/Gong Bath : June 22
Finding your Neutrality within a challenging time – Meditation/Gong Bath : June 22

On the evening of Monday 22 June, WIFA hosted an exclusive event at Red Doors Studio, where Martha Collard took members on a journey to bring balance, calm, and focus to one’s mind, body, and spirit.

We were taken on an experience of deep relaxation surrounded by the largest gong collection in Hong Kong. The vibrations from the gongs eliminate tension, stimulate the circulation and glandular systems, and regenerate the parasympathetic nervous system. There was a sense of connectedness and peace.
Many thanks to the members who participated in the event.

If you have further questions and wish to learn more about Gong Bath meditation, please go to http://www.red-doors.com

Many thanks to the WIFA Networking committee for making this all possible.

MMP Networking Event - July 8
MMP Networking Event - July 8
WiFA hosted its first Mentor and Mentee Cocktail Reception of 2020. It was a welcome opportunity to come together face to face to meet old friends and make new ones. The evening was infused with laughter and camaraderie as MMP Committee co-chairs Sonja Key, Donna Titley, and Tonia Wong Kee welcomed everybody to enjoy some refreshments and mingle. Our WIFA co- chairs, Bonnie So and Benedict Nolens and Executive Director Bonnie Ohri also joined and provided an update on upcoming WiFA initiatives. Many mentors and mentees had the chance to share their experiences and make new connections after the recent relaxation of the social distancing measures. Women from different parts of the finance industry from companies such as AIA, Morgan Stanley, Julius Baer, KPMG and many more, gathered in AIA’s offices overlooking the breathtaking view of Victoria Harbor.

Many thanks to AIA for hosting the venue and providing this wonderful opportunity to connect. Stay tuned for several inspiring mentor mentee success stories which we will soon feature online.

ASIFMA’s virtual event: 'Diversity after COVID-19' : Jun 30
Being the endorser of the event, WiFA has been supporting ASIFMA’s virtual event ‘Diversity after COVID-19’, was held on Tuesday, 30 June.

Sarah Maynard (CFA Institute), Aleem Jivraj (Nomura), Sneha Sanghvi (Westpac) and Gabriella Zanzanaini (The Women's Foundation) discussed the opportunity for Diversity & Inclusion (D&L) post-COVID-19, along with the foreseeable challenges in terms of implementing D&I initiatives and the innovative solutions.
The event attracted close to 100 participants. The panel shared how the industry has demonstrated an unforeseen ability to change in performing the COVID-19 pivot to Work from Home. This is a way to encourage D&L so as to attract and retain talent, as well as an opportunity for employers to differentiate themselves. The event recording and polling result are available online if you were unable to join this event live.

WiFA’s past chosen charity, RUN, focuses on the most vulnerable refugees, particularly women, offering them the opportunity to rehabilitate and recuperate through sports, education and beyond. Last month we asked you to cook for a cause and purchase the RUN Cookbook with all proceeds going directly to support RUN’s programmes (and you still can here).

This month, we are encouraging you to sign up for RUN’s annual charity race. The race, RUN’s largest fundraising event of the year, will take place on 7 November 2020 at Tai Tam Country Park. There are multiple categories (including kids) and a delicious meal will be waiting for you at the finish line, prepared by the refugees. Registration is now open here.WIFA

WiFA LIKES: Building a Philippines Soapcycling and Hygiene Education Program Together
WiFA LIKES: Building a Philippines Soapcycling and Hygiene Education Program Together
Soapcycling, the sister organisation of our 2020 WiFA supported charity EmpowerU, is expanding its Hong Kong operations abroad for the first time and they need your support! For the past 9 years Soap Cycling has sent 80% of unused soap from Hong Kong's hospitality sector to the Philippines. That amount represents approximately 3 million bars of soap - reaching 250,000 children for an entire year.
After years of working remotely with local partners, Soapcycling is hiring a country manager, Lovelyn, a resident of Hong Kong for 22 years, to oversee soap donations, distributions, recycling and hygiene education programs for the neediest communities in the Phillippines. Your support will be critical to Lovelyn's efforts to bring products and education programs to rural communities with limited access to hygienic resources. She will serve as a model for entrepreneurship and civic action for migrant workers looking to return home from Hong Kong. To donate, please visit here. For questions about direct sponsorship, please contact Karen Liu.
