Member Engagement | BMCC Facilitates Rewarding Introduction between Members and Invest Selangor
image
image
BMCC is proud to have played a significant role in the introduction of our valued members, London Tea Exchange and Sports Direct with Selangor’s investment arm, Invest Selangor.

We were delighted that further engagements have been made following Invest Selangor’s arranged visit to our members in London as part of their 4-day Trade & Investment Mission to the UK in July. The delegation, led by YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Chief Minister of Selangor visited London Tea Exchange’s tea shop in Brick Lane and was warmly greeted by its Chief Executive, Sheikh Aliur Rahman as well as Managing Partner, Syed Ansar where both parties discussed potential collaborations and investments in Selangor. The team also had the chance to meet up with Alexander McMillan, Group Head of Freehold Property from Sports Direct (Frasers Group) to discuss further investment apart from the current setup in Selangor. The Chamber applauds this connection and constantly advocates for the development of strong networking growth of our members.

London Tea Exchange began trading in 2014, offering over 300 varieties of premium teas sourced directly from over 40 different countries exclusive to the company.

Sports Direct (rebranded as Frasers Group) is the UK’s largest sports goods retailer, operating around 950 stores worldwide with 600 in the UK.

Sales Tax to be Imposed on Imported Products Purchased Online
The Dewan Rakyat has passed an amendment to the Sales Tax Act 2018 to tax imported low-value goods (LVG) sales through the Sales Tax (Amendment) Bill 2022. The amendment seeks to impose a flat rate sales tax of 10% on both resident and foreign sellers offering products online that are priced below RM500. A new Section 11A will be created, under the Bill, which will define LVG as "any prescribed goods or class of goods outside Malaysia which are sold and brought into Malaysia". This comes in as a means of providing a level playing field for locally manufactured goods, in which equal tax treatment will be given to both locally manufactured and imported goods. The new law will cover both sellers, in or outside Malaysia, selling LVG online, and will be implemented on 1 January 2023.
