Lecture Description:

This lecture will examine the pain pathway and identification of physiologic and behavioral changes that occur in patients experiencing pain during the peri-operative period. Different classes of analgesic drugs and how they produce their effects within the pain pathway will be discussed. At the conclusion of this lecture attendees will participate in a case study and open discussion on how they would utilize pre-medications, maintenance CRI's, local blocks, and post-operative analgesics to manage a patient experiencing both acute and chronic pain.

Objectives:

1. Participants will identify physiologic and behavioral changes that occur in patients experiencing acute and chronic pain

2. Participants will identify how opioids, local anesthetics, NSAIDS, α2 agonists, NMDA antagonists, phenothiazines, benzodiazepines, and inhalant anesthetics target various areas within the pain pathway

3. Participants will practice a pre-operative pain assessment and pain management plan via a case study
