Preliminary Agenda*

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2020

12:00pm - 7:00pm - Registration Open

1:00pm – 4:00pm – Pre-Conference Workshops

PC1 - Ground Control To Major Tom, Can You Hear Me? Reaching Students Where They Are Through Video and Podcasting

This presentation will showcase several easy to master technologies that will allow instructors to reach their students in a variety of ways that students are open to. Instructors will leave with the knowledge to allow them to set up their own video postcards, video updates, current events podcasts and more- all tailored to their own area of expertise.

PC2 - Move Over Alexa: The Power of Voice Technologies & Chatbots in the Classroom

This session will focus on cutting edge technologies that rely on voice (Alexa, Siri) and Artificial Intelligence (Chatbots). We will work with the technologies and see how they can be used in the classroom where students are consumers of the technology but also creators.

PC3 - Wearable Technology for Authentic Student Reflection - CANCELLED

This session will focus on student-centered authentic reflections using wearable technology (GoPro cameras). Germanna Community College's dental assisting and dental hygiene programs use wearable devices to complete observational assessments of students during clinical. While cleaning a patient's teeth, dental students are assessed on the procedure and patient interactions. Often students cannot recall interactions with patients and the use of wearable devices has bridged this gap allowing students to review a dental cleaning without environmental and mental filters that may obstruct memory. We will be discussing how the wearable devices were introduced to the students, the student reactions to the GoPro cameras, and how authentic self-reflection affects student success.

PC4 - Come One! Come All! Making Online Classes (and Campuses) Inviting, Accessible, and Effective

Faculty, instructional designers, and online program administrators are all responsible for creating a culture of inclusion, accessibility and student success. How can we commit to equity and accessibility, while also creating classes that are both rigorous and inviting, both challenging and supportive? There are three ways to be present in an online class: cognitively, instructionally, and socially. In this session, we will share concrete ways for you to enhance online classes, making them inviting, accessible and effective, for one and all.
