Color Marketing Group®

Color Marketing Group® (CMG) is The Premier International Association for Color Design Professionals®. Our mission is creating accurate and relevant color and trend forecast information by connecting global color professionals in their shared passion.

A not-for-profit international association of color design professionals, Color Marketing Group® is a forum for the exchange of all things color. Members represent a broad spectrum of designers, marketers, color scientists, consultants, educators, and artists.

Since 1962, CMG members have been turning a shared passion for color, into business opportunities across all industries. Our members come together at local and international color forecasting events to interpret, create, forecast, and select colors with the goal of enhancing manufactured goods and services. By collaborating, we better identify the direction of color and design trends. Then, interpret that information across industries.

You live in color and so do we. Its influences are everywhere, the environment, social issues, changing political climates – they all impact color in one industry, which have a reverberating effect on another. We believe the only way to stay competitive within such constant change, is by harnessing each other’s endless flow of knowledge and understanding.

Color Communication & the Principles of Color Theory

by Melissa Williams

Presentation Summary

What is color? Melissa will cover the basic principles of color theory interpreted through art, science, and psychology. Most importantly, once we create a color concept, how do we communicate our ideas and experiences in a universal color language?

Color communication concepts will be presented to review the science behind colorimetry, color order systems, color measurement techniques, spectral data, and visual evaluations. In order to turn our concepts into reality, we should also know what products are being used. The basic properties of pigments and their limitations will be discussed.

From Mud to Pearls™ - The Evolution of Pigment Dispersions for Architectural Colorants

by Katelyn Bevilacqua

Presentation Summary

Explore the century-long evolution of color technology in pigment dispersion with Katelyn as she navigates through the imperative shift towards eco-friendly solutions in response to stringent environmental regulations. The presentation traces the historical development of colorants, beginning with ancient practices using rocks in caves and culminating in the groundbreaking innovation of nitrogen freeze-dried colorants.

Discover how Neanderthals mined hematite from the earth, using it with water to create cave wall paintings. Progressing to the 18th century, witness the innovation of using rust mixed with linseed oil, giving rise to the iconic barn red. Experience the transformative journey of pigment dispersions from in-plant standard colors to the revolutionary, biocide-free, environmentally friendly Pearls™ in the last century.

Katelyn's slide deck will illustrate this progression, showcasing the evolution from pigment dispersions to point-of-sale colorant systems. This evolution laid the foundation for machine tinting and comprehensive color systems, responding to current environmental and health concerns. Legislative initiatives advocating for zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) colorants have paved the way for the groundbreaking Pearls™—a solid, biocide-free colorant easily dispersed in water.

About Katelyn

Color Scientist and CMG member, Katelyn Bevilacqua, began her career in chemical testing at a steel mill laboratory and as an undergraduate research assistant focusing on biohybrid nanomaterials. Joining Vibrantz Technologies (formerly Chromaflo), she excelled as a thermoset technical service technician, leveraging her expertise in pigment dispersions and reflectance curves to advance to her current role as a Color Scientist.

In her current position, Katelyn conducts colorant characterizations, analyzes color spaces for coatings customers, and provides technical support for Innovatint software. She also leads the company's global color of the year initiative and contributes to technical marketing efforts. With a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Youngstown State University, Katelyn resides in Warren, Ohio, bringing her interdisciplinary perspective to the field of color science.
