Keynote Speaker - Jeremiah Brown, The 4 Year Olympian
Make the Impossible Possible: Lessons From an Improbable Olympic Journey
What does it take to achieve your biggest goals? In this keynote, you’ll experience a roller coaster journey full of insights on working through uncertainty, forging self-leadership, thinking bigger, staying resilient, and maximizing potential from one of the fastest Olympians ever to go from his parents’ couch to the Olympic podium.
Jeremiah Brown challenges common notions of what it means to embrace change in the pursuit of potential. He shows how to adapt to forces outside of one’s control and stay committed when the pressure is on, all while encouraging a healthy dose of self-compassion and humility. Using vivid real-life Olympic setbacks, failures, and ultimate success, Jeremiah illuminates the true measures for success in any competitive environment.

Dispatchers must frequently de-escalate callers who are experiencing mental health crises in order to communicate more effectively with them. Despite this, dispatchers receive little training on this task. The training that dispatchers do receive is often designed for first responders who are taught strategies for managing lengthy face-to-face interactions. Often, this training does not generalize well to interactions that must take place over the phone or to interactions that may last only a few minutes. In this presentation, I discuss a scenario-based training program that was designed specifically for dispatchers so that they can learn to effectively de-escalate callers experiencing mental health crises. More specifically, I will describe (1) the training development process, (2) the training curriculum, (3) novel training features, and (4) the results from a preliminary evaluation of the training.
