Conference overview

Digital Economy is transforming several industries globally; the retail sector has borne the brunt of it. The advent of e-commerce that ushered in bankruptcies of several mega-retailers in the West (like Toys R US, Sears, RadioShack, etc.) shows no sign of slowing. In Malaysia, the proportion of retail business conducted online has steadily climbed to five-percent, and seems to be following the same trend observed in China, the U.K., and the U.S. – all markets in which e-commerce accounts of more than 10% of retail business and continues to eat the share of brick-and-mortar retailers.

However, the transformational power of Digital Economy is not limited to e-commerce alone. Several other technology-enabled developments are emerging. Malaysian retailers are already grappling with "Big Data" analytics, using a variety of cashless payment methods, and have started to experience the force of "gig economy". A few others, such as the internet of things (IOT) and Blockchain, are waiting in the wings. While trying to make sense of these digital drivers of the business environment, retailers also face equally challenging logistics-related questions. These questions, such as the ones below, will get compounded by the emerging digital developments.

  • How should brick-and-mortar retailers integrate the online store into their business to provide an omnichannel experience? Should e-commerce retailers go physical as well?
  • How should e-commerce and omnichannel retailers organize the last-mile delivery?
  • How should payments be handled – in stores, online, or upon delivery?
  • How should product returns and reverse logistics be organized?

Just like last year, this year's conference brings together a selected group of experts, from a broad range of domains, engaged in this transformation. Join us for a unique chance to hear their thoughts and ask them your questions directly, in a lavish yet intimate setting of Sasana Kijang on March 5, 2019!
