Fast growing emerging markets like Southeast Asia are facing numerous shocks within the global economy. Investors are confronting short-term issues such as high inflation, bear markets and rising poverty, while the civil war and the war in Ukraine are hindering economic recovery.

Some of the Southeast Asian countries that the World Bank estimated to see growth in 2022 such as the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia are still forecast to fall short of the previous year's growth rate.

As investors weigh the impact on growth that this short to medium term pain might inflict on their projects, identifying a suitable discount rate becomes of great importance to deciding on financial viability.

This session is the first of MPE&VCA's Advanced Technical Series from which we will learn from on-the-ground experts and practitioners, knowledge useful for the PE & VC sector's on-going work.

How should an investor focusing on an emerging market, hard hit by issues not seen in years, evaluate the most future cash flows necessary to provide acceptable project returns? What considerations apply in setting the right discount rate to use?
