EuroCham Lao PDR, in collaboration with the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Australia Chamber of Commerce, British Business Group Lao PDR, British Embassy to Lao PDR, CIVITAS, Embassy of Canada to Lao PDR, Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR, and the EU Delegation in Lao PDR are grateful to announce the shortlisted companies for the prestigious 'Lao Responsible Business Awards 2023'.

Alistair Brown
Judge at AustCham Lao

Alistair, an Australian business leader who came to Laos in 2010 as MD of Lao Tobacco Ltd. (LTL), a successful and profitable Lao joint venture company, 47% owned by the Lao government.

Alistair was involved in consulting with Lao public organisations representing the 750 strong Lao workforce in LTL, meeting regularly with party organisation and Lao labor union representatives. He now supports the commercial capability development of Lao entities and their people through a mix of strategic leadership, mentoring, training and consulting projects.

Nakano JUNYA
Judge at Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR

Mr. NAKANO has over thirty years’ experience working in the foreign service of the Japanese Government. He has worked in fields of relations with Russia, climate change, international cultural exchange and trade control in Tokyo. He also assigned at the Japanese Embassy in Russia, Austria and Australia as well as Permanent Mission of Japan to the U.N. In November 2021, he was nominated as Minister, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Japan in the Lao PDR. Mr. NAKANO holds a B.A. in Law from the University of Tokyo as well as M.A. in London School of Economics. He speaks Japanese, English and Russian.

Bob Paquin
Judge at Office of the Embassy of Canada in Laos

Bob Paquin took up his current position in August 2021 as Chargé d’affaires and Head of Office of Canada’s diplomatic mission in Laos, established in 2016. Mr Paquin was most recently Head of the Oslo-based Canadian International Arctic Centre from 2015-21. Working in partnership with Canadian missions and other departments and agencies in Canada, the Arctic Centre offered strategic advice to inform Canada’s Arctic advocacy, foreign policy directions and actions. Prior to this, Mr Paquin’s diplomatic assignments included work on a range of policy and geographic files, including human rights, counter-terrorism, international critical incidents, Middle East and Asia policy, and he has also served abroad in Singapore and briefly in
Afghanistan. Before joining Global Affairs Canada, he undertook consulting work in Southeast Asia for the Canadian International Development Agency, helped launch the Forum of Federations NGO, and worked in the private sector, in the publishing industry.

Emma Pelletreau
Judge at Civitas Co., Ltd.

In 2019 Emma Pelletreau decided to transform her 15+ years of experience as an applied anthropologist working for participatory development in Laos, and alongside Mette Boatman, started Civitas Co., Ltd., a consultancy company. A wholly foreign owned company, Civitas has made business decisions to be completely transparent and accountable from the very beginning. The rewards and challenges of this approach have given Emma unique insights into the costs and benefits of responsible business in the unique Lao environment. Now based in France, Emma remains Programmes and Operations Director of Civitas, and returns to Laos for work annually.

Dr. Catherine Phuong
Judge at UNDP

Dr. Catherine Phuong has worked for more than twenty years in the areas of development, governance, and human rights. She is currently Officer-in-Charge at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Lao PDR. She was previously Assistant Resident Representative, Governance and Participation at UNDP Viet Nam. Prior to that, she worked at the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), first at headquarters in Geneva and then in the field. From 2015 to 2017, she acted as Deputy Regional Representative for the Regional Office for the Pacific (based in Fiji). From 2011 to 2015, she led the Rule of Law Programme in Cambodia. Prior to joining the UN, she was an academic in the UK, where she taught international law and European law.

Dr. Phuong is a graduate of the Institute of Political Studies in Paris (Sciences Po). She holds a Master’s in International Law from the University of Durham and a PhD from the University of Nottingham in the UK. She is a French national and is married with two children.

Andras Racz
Judge at European Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lao

Representing the European Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Lao PDR, Andras Racz has a background in brewing, food and drinks manufacturing. He has over 18 years' experience from the brewing and beverage industry and mainly from Carlsberg Group where he worked in different countries in Europe and also currently in Lao PDR at Lao Brewery Company as Brewery Director. LBC (Beerlao) is a market leader and one of the biggest employers in Lao PDR where Andras’s responsibility is the production of safe products for the consumers and also to make sure the company applying the new technologies as well developing employees’ capability and skills.

Sustainability, employee wellbeing, diversity and inclusion are priorities in Andras’s daily work and also have been already for a long time as in Carlsberg and Scandinavia these areas have been in the focus for many years.

Prior moving to Laos 2 years ago Andras and his family lived in Norway for over 10 years, and he is Hungarian/Norwegian double citizen and speaks fluent English, Norwegian and Hungarian. He holds a Master Brewer Diploma from Copenhagen, an MSC in Food Engineering from Budapest Corvinus University and an MBA from Pecs University, Hungary.

Judge at British Business Group Lao PDR

Lee Sheridan is an ardent believer that a well-managed business can, and should be, a force for good – for local communities, the environment and wider stakeholders - and can be so while generating healthy profits. As a passionate business leader with a strong background in sustainability, Lee has made it his mission to transform businesses to be the best that they can be.

Lee is an accomplished senior tourism industry professional, and in addition to his record of building responsible tourism companies, he has extensive consultancy experience across international development organisations and INGOs. He is currently the Senior Skills for Tourism Expert on a vocational training programme with LuxDev in Laos, and represents the BBGL where he is part of the Advisory Board, as well as being on the CSR Committee and chairing their Business Enquiries Committee.
