Laos, officially Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) - Historically a popular hub of overland trade, economically wealthy as well as culturally. The communist government took power in 1975 and economy was weakened in the early years of its rule. Laos began its minimal liberalization to advance its"state-managed, market-orientated economy" in 1986.
