Music Therapist at North Shore Hospice
I use music to effect changes in the physical, psychological, emotional and social functioning of hospice patients and their families. I use voice, guitar, harp, percussion, listening and counseling and lots and lots of training in music therapy to facilitate the end of life for our patients and families.
Founder of Chicago Dance Therapy
Erica Hornthal is a licensed professional clinical counselor and board certified dance/movement therapist. She received her MA in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling from Columbia College Chicago and her BS in psychology from University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana.
Owner & Music Therapist at Right at Home North Shore/Chicago
Having all four grandparents and five living great-grandparents as a young child, I have always been drawn to working with older adults. A Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy and Master’s degree in Community Counseling led to a successful tenure in hospice care preceding my joining the incredible, service-focused world of Right at Home in 2013. I am passionate about assisting individuals to remain as independent as possible for as long as possible, aging in place with dignity and autonomy, or recuperating from an illness or injury in the comfort of their own home! It is an honor to serve my community as part of the RightCare, Right at Home team. When not supporting the needs of our clients, caregivers, and community, I still enjoy making music, especially with my husband and four children.

Founded in 1975 as a division of the Music Institute of Chicago, the Institute for Therapy through the Arts (ITA) is one of the few comprehensive community-based arts therapy programs in the United States to offer four creative arts treatment modalities – Music Therapy, Drama Therapy, Art Therapy, and Dance/Movement Therapy. ITA became an independent nonprofit on September 1, 2015 and serves approximately 1800 clients every year.
itachicago.org/Hospice is not a place, rather a concept and a way of care. Since 1979, NorthShore’s hospice has been helping patients share their final months and days with their families with peace, comfort and dignity. Hospice helps patients remain in their own homes when possible and their preference, and also provides care at NorthShore Evanston, Glenbrook, Highland Park and Skokie hospitals as well as in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
www.northshore.org/hospice/Chicago Dance Therapy is a psychotherapy practice nestled in Chicago’s North Shore. We service Chicago, Northbrook, Deerfield, Highland Park, Glenview, Evanston, and the surrounding suburbs. We offer counseling with a body-centered approach focused on connecting mind, body, and spirit.
Mind
In dance/movement therapy, movement is the therapeutic tool used to process feelings and emotions. The client is encouraged to experience, observe, and process behaviors and thoughts through body sensations, non-verbal communication, and body language. We use the body to recharge, refocus, and even re-pattern the mind.
Body
We use the body to assess, observe, and intervene in the therapeutic relationship. When words alone may not be expressing what someone is experiencing, dance/movement therapy can help to validate and support each individual.
Spirit
This holistic alternative to traditional talk therapy is a wonderful way to treat mind, body, and spirit. Using movement we can connect to our subconscious, enhance our awareness, and learn to be more present.
