Join us for a discussion on the New York Times Bestseller, The American Imperative: Reclaiming Global Leadership through Soft Power, written by Senior Vice President at CSIS, contributor, and podcaster Daniel Runde

We are in a new age of great power competition. This competition will not be fought in Beijing or Moscow but will be contested in Ukraine, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Daniel Runde explores how our non-military power must adjust and change to meet the rising challenges.

Why is this important for Arizona?

The American Imperative: Reclaiming Global Leadership through Soft Power is relevant for Arizonans, given the state's economic ties with Latin America and Asia. The book's call for renewed American engagement in the developing world aligns with Arizona's trade, security, and diplomacy interests. As great-power competition extends to new arenas, Arizona's potential to participate in trade and diplomatic initiatives gains prominence. The book's focus on soft power resonates with Arizona's spirit of innovation and multiculturalism. The book offers Arizonan insights into contributing to a prosperous global order that aligns with their values by prompting a conversation about non-military global influence.

About the Book

It's time for America to get back in the international leadership game.

What should our global strategy look like in an age of renewed great power competition? And what must America offer to a newly empowered developing world when we're no longer the only major player?

In The American Imperative, international development expert Daniel Runde makes the case for building a new global consensus through vigorous internationalism and the judicious use of soft power. Runde maps out many of the steps that we need to take––primarily in the non-military sphere––to ensure an alliance of stable and secure, like-minded, self-reliant partner nations in order to prevent rising authoritarian powers such as China from running the world.
