Dr. Pirelli is Board Certified in Forensic Psychology (ABPP) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Psychology (AAFP). He received his Ph.D. from The Graduate Center at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He is a Licensed Psychologist in three (3) states: New Jersey (#4975),
New York (#019418), and Pennsylvania (#018980). His experience includes working in numerous inpatient and outpatient settings, including hospitals, psychiatric centers, and correctional facilities. Specifically, he trained and worked in 13 settings prior to entering full-time private practice: 4 hospital/inpatient, 4 outpatient, 3 forensic/inpatient, and 2 prisons. He has since worked in many additional settings for cases at the county, state and federal levels, and has conducted evaluations in matters from all 21 NJ counties, in addition to numerous states (e.g., NJ, NY, PA, RI, & CA).
Dr. Pirelli leads the group practice, Pirelli Clinical and Forensic Psychology, LLC (www.gpirelli.com), and conducts evaluations in criminal, civil, and administrative matters, including but not limited to:
Criminal: (a) Criminal Competencies, (b) Mental State at the time of the Offense/Criminal Responsibility/Mens Rea, and (c) Pre-Trial and Sentencing Mitigation (Risk/Diversion)
Civil: (a) Tort/Personal Injury, Wrongful Death (b) Workers’ Compensation/Disability,
(c) Civil Commitment, including Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) evaluations;
(d) Employment Harassment, Discrimination, Wrongful Termination (e) Civil Capacities, including Guardianship, and (f) Parenting Risk/Capacity/Supervision
Other: (a) Firearm Evaluations (applicants, reinstatement, “Red Flag”), (b) Fitness-for-Duty (FFD),
(c) Immigration, (d) Violence and/or Sexual Risk Assessment, and (e) Voluntariness of Confessions and Interrogation-Related Matters
Dr. Pirelli has taught over 40 post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate courses at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Montclair State University. In addition, he was the Editor of the state journal, the New Jersey Psychologist, and has been on the editorial board and a reviewer for leading journals in the field.
Dr. Pirelli maintains an active clinical-forensic research program through the Center for Research & Training (CRT) at Pirelli Clinical and Forensic Psychology, LLC. He has given many professional conference presentations, invited talks, trainings and CE/CLE workshops, and has numerous publications,
including three (3) books with Oxford University Press: The Ethical Practice of Forensic Psychology: A Casebook (2017), The Behavioral Science of Firearms: A Mental Health Perspective on Guns, Suicide, and Violence (2018), and Firearms and Clinical Practice: A Handbook for Medical and Mental Health Professionals (2023), as well as chapters in books such as the Handbook of Forensic Psychology (4th Edition), Violent Offenders: Understanding and Assessment, and Psychology in the Courtroom. His research has been cited in amicus briefs to the United States Supreme Court and the New York Court of Appeals, and in the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice final report (2020).
