With the recent global stocktake (GST) outcomes published during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28), leaders within various industries are increasingly immersing themselves in the exploration of corporate climate strategies and high-impact solutions for the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions. This "Delivering the 'Net' in Net-Zero: Discourse & Workshop Series" conceptualizes bridging existing knowledge gaps of carbon removal concepts and strategies as businesses embark on their net-zero transition.

Conducted collaboratively by the Business Councils for Sustainable Development (BCSD) Malaysiaand the World Business Councils for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the discourse series aims to explore topics central to carbon removal strategies. This includes carbon dioxide removal (CDR), carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). To provide further context, CDR refers to approaches that remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere using a wide array of approaches. This includes direct air capture (DAC) coupled with durable storage, soil carbon sequestration, biomass carbon removal and storage, enhanced mineralization, ocean-based CDR, and afforestation/reforestation.

Several policy frameworks have highlighted challenges across the energy transition levers from low-carbon emissions and clean energy solutions. These challenges encompass a lack of clarity and guidance in implementing decarbonization across the value chain, limited collaboration among stakeholders, and the capital-intensive nature of such initiatives. Therefore, the forthcoming discourse series aims to gather diverse expertise from various front-to-abate sectors such as oil and gas, and aviation. This collaborative platform will facilitate the sharing of perspectives on current carbon removal strategies within the local context, addressing challenges, and aligning plans with the national framework such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Joe is Executive Director, Asia Pacific for the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the global, CEO-led community of the world’s leading sustainable businesses working together to realize a net-zero, nature-positive, more equitable future.

Joe is responsible for the engagement of ambitious companies from across Asia and Australasia in the World Business Council. He has supported collective action projects by business with demonstrable outcomes in areas such as climate change, energy transition, water risk, mobility and more resilient agriculture.

Born and educated in the UK, Joe has worked in Asia since 2009. He plays cricket and lives in Singapore with his wife, a writer, and their daughter.

Roberto is the founding director of BCSD Malaysia Berhad, the Business Council for Sustainable Development Malaysia, a Global Network partner of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

Roberto Benetello is the CEO of MAREA Berhad – Malaysia Recycling Alliance, Malaysia’s first voluntary, not-for-profit, industry-driven EPR platform to tackle consumer packaging waste issues.

Roberto is a corporate sustainability expert. He strives to assist businesses accelerate the transition to a sustainable world by offering tools, methodologies, training, and capacity building to support the embedment of sustainability into corporate strategy and operations.

With over twenty-five years’ experience, Roberto’s career includes several senior general management positions with both fortune-500 companies and start-ups, in countries such as Italy, UK, Spain and Malaysia. His main skills include corporate sustainability, international relations and business facilitation, strategic business planning, general management, marketing and business development.

Roberto holds an MBA from SDA Bocconi in Italy and an MA in Marketing from Lincoln University, UK.

Emily Oi is a climate policy consultant with nearly a decade of multi-sectoral experience across international and national level. Emily specialises in policy advocacy and analysis, strategic engagement and facilitation in the climate change and corporate sustainability field. Currently, she is a board member of Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD) Malaysia, a CEO-led platform for Malaysian businesses to collaborate and strengthen capacity on sustainability. Emily also now acts as a regional consultant to the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) – a global environmental non-profit organisation, where she helps facilitate Asia Pacific partnerships as well as conduct climate and energy policy research related to regional energy transition.

Emily played a pivotal role as a core working group member of the Technology and Innovation Cluster under the Climate Change Advisory Panel to Malaysia’s Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC). Emily was also a YSEALI Professional Fellow under the Sustainable Development and Environment theme, where she supported the Virginia State's Albermale County's Climate Resilience Planning process. Prior to that, she was a Senior Policy Analyst with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Centre (MGTC), a federal agency under the Ministry of Environment and Water. Emily also served in various capacity with Ernst and Young (EY) Malaysia, YTL Corporation Berhad, Malaysian Youth Delegation (MYD) and Power Shift Malaysia. Emily holds a MSc Environmental Monitoring and Management as well as a BEng Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering from the University of Nottingham Malaysia.

With over a decade of professional experience spanning across diverse sectors, Wan Muqtadir has made a significant impact in the realm of sustainability. Initially trained as an aircraft engineer, he embarked on a journey to pioneer greener aircraft maintenance practices, thus demonstrating his commitment to sustainability. His academic accolades include a master's degree in Environment and Development from the Graduate Institute of International Development, Agriculture and Economics (GIIDAE) at the University of Reading. Prior to his current role at BSI Group, he contributed his expertise to Fortune 500 company. In recent years, Wan Muqtadir's focus has centered on driving assurance in the palm oil industry, fostering dialogues and initiatives that promote sustainable palm oil production, exemplified by his management of the PalmGHG calculator, responsible new plantings, also remote sensing verification. Presently, he leads BSI's sustainability team in Malaysia, with a primary focus on GHG verification, sustainability report assurance, carbon neutrality verification, and the certification of sustainable palm oil.

Diego Hopkins was appointed as Head of Climate Change in September 2022. Prior to joining PETRONAS, Diego worked as Environmental Consultant at the World Bank, in Washington DC, focusing on environmental policy, mitigation strategies, and carbon markets.
Diego holds a Master of Science degree in Environmental, Economic, and Social Sustainability from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a PhD in Environmental Economics from Imperial College London.

Currently, as Head of Climate Change, Diego focuses on analysing the development and implementation of environmental policy and regulations globally, as well as bringing expertise in carbon price, and voluntary and compliance carbon markets.

Ts. Azreen Abd Aziz holds a Master of Engineering (Gas) and a Bachelor Degree in Chemical Gas obtained from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Currently, he is pursuing his study (Doctor of Philosophy) in Hydrogen for the Industrial Park application. He is registered as a graduate engineer under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) in the Chemical Engineering discipline. Besides, he is also recognized as a professional technologist by the Malaysian Board of Technologists (MBOT) in green technology and acknowledged by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) as a site manager and green card holder.

Prior to joining MIGHT, he worked in the oil and gas industry, particularly to produce petrochemical-based products and R&D for pipeline inspection services. Throughout his experience of 10 years at MIGHT, he has been entrusted by the management to involve himself in various levels of deliverables, specializing in the sustainable technology application for various sectors mainly in energy, rare earth industry, smart cities, agriculture, electric vehicle-automotive, waste, etc.

He was involved in the development of the Malaysian Solar PV Roadmap 2030 and managed the RMK-11 project for the establishment of the Regional Solar Hub Testing, Certification, and Training Centre in Shah Alam. Besides, he delivered the physical project implementation by performing financial analysis and supervising the engineering, construction, and installation of a 100 kW solar PV system. On the other hand, he had also contributed technical input focusing on the design concept of smart grid demonstration under GEF 6: Sustainable Cities Development and GEF 8: Decarbonization and Sustainable Cities for a Net-Zero Future in Malaysia. He also led the team for the development of Pelan Perak Lestari 2030, especially to outline the sustainable strategies and action plans and perform the GHG Inventory and Assessment towards reducing GHG emissions at the state level.
