Kimberley Capers has served as an Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor since December 2016. During her tenure, she has worked in the Special Victims Unit and was Chief Assistant Prosecutor of the Confidential Investigations Unit. Since February 2022, she is has served as Chief of the Trial Section. Ms. Capers also continues to be a member of the BCPO Bias Unit.

Ms. Capers obtained her law degree from Fordham University School of Law and her undergraduate degree from New York University, with a major in Journalism and a minor in Metropolitan Studies. Prior to coming to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, she was an Assistant District Attorney in Bronx County for
17 years working primarily in the Domestic Violence and Child Abuse & Sex Crimes Bureaus.

During her tenure as a prosecutor, Ms. Capers has prosecuted numerous misdemeanor and felony child abuse, sex crimes and domestic violence cases from inception through disposition, including case investigation, case preparation, grand jury presentation, pre-trial hearing, witness preparation, trial and sentencing. In addition, she investigated and prosecuted internal affairs complaints against law enforcement officers and allegations of misconduct by public officials.

Ms. Capers serves as the co-chair of the Diversity Committee of the Bergen County Bar Association.

Matthew R. Fitzpatrick has served as an Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor since September 2014. During his tenure, he has worked in the Juvenile, Grand Jury, and Trial Sections of the office. In January 2018, he was elevated to trial team leader where he worked hands-on with a junior trial team member. Currently, he is assigned to the Major Crimes Unit, where he assists in the investigation and prosecution of homicides, fatal accidents, and arson cases.

Mr. Fitzpatrick obtained his law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law and his undergraduate degree from Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Prior to earning his law degree, Mr. Fitzpatrick worked as an on-air correspondent in the television news industry. Toward the latter half of his news career, he attended law school in the evening while working full time. Before joining the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Mr. Fitzpatrick was a law clerk for The Honorable Jonathan Harris (ret.) in the Appellate Division from 2013-2014.

Mr. Fitzpatrick has handled hundreds of cases in the past eight years, including murder, attempted murder, felony murder, aggravated manslaughter, police-involved shootings, fatal accidents, arson, robbery, sexual assault, aggravated assault, weapons possession, burglary, and narcotics possession and distribution cases. For the past several years Mr. Fitzpatrick also has been an instructor at the Bergen County Police Academy and has volunteered for the BCPO Community Engagement Task Force, where he has partnered with local law enforcement to help break down some of the barriers that exist between police agencies and the communities they serve.

Jessica A. Gomperts has served as an Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor since September 2000. During her tenure, she has worked in the Appellate, Juvenile, Grand Jury, and Trial Sections of the office. Since January 2011, she is assigned to the Domestic Violence Squad, where she has served as its Chief since March 2013.

Ms. Gomperts obtained her law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law and her undergraduate degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a double major in psychology and philosophy and a minor in ethics and public policy. Prior to coming to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, she was a law clerk to Justice Virginia Long, first in the Appellate Division in 1998-1999, and then in the Supreme Court in 1999-2000. Ms. Gomperts is a frequent lecturer on the topics of domestic violence, dating violence, elder abuse, and intimate partner violence in the LGBTQ community. She is a Police Training Commission certified instructor and teaches extensively to police officers, attorneys, and students. She serves as the Domestic Violence Legal Advisor to all 72 of Bergen County’s municipalities. Ms. Gomperts has also served as a trustee on the Bergen County Bar Association Board of Trustees since 2020.

Ms. Gomperts has handled literally hundreds of domestic violence cases in the past eleven and one-half years, including attempted murders, aggravated sexual assaults, interferences with custody, kidnappings, aggravated assaults, etc.

Ms. Gomperts co-chairs the Bergen County Domestic Violence Working Group, and is a member of the Statewide County Domestic Violence Liaison Working Group. Ms. Gomperts has taught countless Continuing Legal Education classes on domestic violence at the Attorney General’s Office Annual Domestic Violence Symposium, the County Prosecutor’s Association Annual College, the New Jersey State Bar Association Annual Meeting, the New Jersey Association for Justice Boardwalk Seminar, the New Jersey Association for Justice Meadowlands Seminar, the Bergen County Bar Association, and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.

Ian Liberty is an Assistant Deputy Public Defender in the Passaic Trial Region of the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender, where he has worked since January 2018. Ian previously served as a law clerk in both the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico and the New Jersey Superior Court - Criminal Division. Ian was also Assistant Counsel to the New Jersey Senate Majority Office, where he served as counsel to the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee, Senate Commerce Committee, and the Senate Higher Education Committee. Ian graduated from Rutgers Law School in 2014, where he was a Kinoy-Stavis Public Interest Fellow, Chair of the Rutgers Public Interest Law Foundation, and Editor in Chief of the Rutgers Race and the Law Review.

Ms. Sutnick, the founding partner of Sutnick & Sutnick, LLC, is licensed to practice law in New Jersey and New York. She is an experienced trial attorney who has successfully defended criminal defendants in both states. Ms. Sutnick is certified by the State of New Jersey as a Criminal Trial Attorney.

Ms. Sutnick is an officer of the Bergen County Bar Association and currently serves as its Second Vice President. She is also the co-chair of the Criminal Law Committee and a Co-Chair of the Judicial Selection Committee.

She was a guest commentator on Court TV. Ms. Sutnick was a trial skills advisor at the Cardozo School of Law Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. and she is a coach for the Northern Valley Demarest Regional High School Mock Trial Team.

Ms. Sutnick began her legal career at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office where she was a senior trial attorney.
