Chief Prosecutor, Domestic Violence Squad at Bergen County Prosecutor's Office
Jessica A. Gomperts has served as an Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor since September 2000. During her tenure, she has worked in the Appellate, Juvenile, Grand Jury, and Trial Sections of the office. Since January 2011, she is assigned to the Domestic Violence Squad, where she has served as its Chief since March 2013.
Ms. Gomperts obtained her law degree from Seton Hall University School of Law and her undergraduate degree from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts, with a double major in psychology and philosophy and a minor in ethics and public policy. Prior to coming to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, she was a law clerk to Justice Virginia Long, first in the Appellate Division in 1998-1999, and then in the Supreme Court in 1999-2000. Ms. Gomperts is a frequent lecturer on the topics of domestic violence, dating violence, elder abuse, and intimate partner violence in the LGBTQ community. She is a Police Training Commission certified instructor and teaches extensively to police officers, attorneys, and students. She serves as the Domestic Violence Legal Advisor to all 72 of Bergen County’s municipalities. Ms. Gomperts has also served as a trustee on the Bergen County Bar Association Board of Trustees since 2020.
Ms. Gomperts has handled literally hundreds of domestic violence cases in the past eleven and one-half years, including attempted murders, aggravated sexual assaults, interferences with custody, kidnappings, aggravated assaults, etc.
Ms. Gomperts co-chairs the Bergen County Domestic Violence Working Group, and is a member of the Statewide County Domestic Violence Liaison Working Group. Ms. Gomperts has taught countless Continuing Legal Education classes on domestic violence at the Attorney General’s Office Annual Domestic Violence Symposium, the County Prosecutor’s Association Annual College, the New Jersey State Bar Association Annual Meeting, the New Jersey Association for Justice Boardwalk Seminar, the New Jersey Association for Justice Meadowlands Seminar, the Bergen County Bar Association, and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
