The Power of Conversation
In a world often divided by polarization, the Philosophy Club at Lauriston Girls School in Melbourne exemplifies the transformative power of conversation. Initiated by two Year 12 students, Audrey and Alison, the club was born from the open, critical, and reflective discussions of their Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class. This student-led initiative fosters a safe and inclusive space where peers explore complex topics, navigate disagreements with respect, and embrace vulnerability to build meaningful connections.
This session highlights how the conversational learning model empowers students to approach hard topics in a culturally sensitive manner, bridging divides rather than creating them. From discussions about love and personality types to addressing controversial viewpoints on identity, the students share how they cultivate curiosity over judgment and encourage active listening and empathy. Through this approach, they model how conversations can inspire self-reflection, deepen understanding, and create a sense of belonging.
Join Audrey, Alison, and their peers as they share their experiences and strategies, demonstrating how conversation-based learning can empower young minds to engage thoughtfully and compassionately in a diverse and interconnected world.
