The ABASA Convention is our annual flagship event. Its focus is the creation of a pipeline of leaders who will push the agenda of transformation at higher echelons of management. It is an opportunity for ABASA to showcase what the organization is about and to create a platform for engagement with black talent. It also presents a marketing opportunity for sponsors and partners to inform our members of products, services and opportunities. It presents an opportunity for the organization to set targets for the next 12 months, report on activities of the organization to members and celebrate the milestones of transforming the profession.

Every year, the Association for Black Accountants of South Africa (ABASA) comes together for its annual convention, a celebration of excellence, progress, and the enduring legacy of its past presidents. This year, we embark on a journey that is not just inspirational but also transformational. In a gesture of profound gratitude, ABASA has chosen to pay tribute to one of its founding fathers, President Jeff Van Rooyen, in a way that goes beyond words. The inaugural Jeff Van Rooyen Invitational sponsored by SAPRO is not merely a golf tournament; it's a testament to the power of one individual's commitment to change and a beacon of hope for all.

President Jeff Van Rooyen, a name synonymous with dedication, leadership, and an unwavering passion for golf, is more than just an icon. He embodies the idea that one person can make a significant impact on the world. As we gather for this historic event, we do so with hearts full of gratitude and admiration for his tireless efforts to transform the accounting profession and on the golf greens. He has shown commitment to this cause by founding Finding the Fairway, Which is aimed at ensuring that caddies are fairly compensated for the work they do and are not just bystanders in the world of golf but integral members of the game. It's about leveling the playing field and ensuring that every person, regardless of their background, has an equal chance to succeed.

Nomathamsanqa Ashom is a qualified Chartered Accountant with over 17 years of experience in
audit, risk management, corporate governance, integrated reporting, business analysis,
International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) requirements, technical experience, and
project management. She has also gained experience in strategic planning, supply chain,
integrated reporting, risk management, business development, project management, financial
information systems, statutory and regulatory compliance, and taxation. Her core industry
experience is in the mining, financial services, pension funds administration, construction,
manufacturing, and oil & gas sectors which she obtained during her long-term secondment to
Lagos, Nigeria. During this tenure, Noma also gained extensive experience conducting financial
statement reviews for clients in the East Africa region.
She is a former committee member on the Education Board Sub Committee for the Independent
Regulatory Board of Auditors. She served as the deputy chair of the South African Auditing
Profession Trust Initiative (SAAPTI) which was a voluntary committee that was established by the
audit profession to identify proactive responses to the concerns prevalent in the South African
auditing profession. Her contribution to the accounting and auditing profession has resulted in a
Judges commendation from the South African Professional Services Award - SAPSA and most
recently she was awarded the Assurance Partner of the Year award by African Women Chartered
Accountants (AWCA) in 2022. Noma currently serves as the CEO of RSM South Africa

Ben Marx was born in 1964 and matriculated in 1984 from Grey College in Bloemfontein.
He obtained his B.Compt (cum laude) in 1987, his B.Compt (Hons) in 1988 and his M.Compt (cum laude) in 1993 at the University of the Free State. He completed his doctoral thesis in Auditing (on the topic of audit committees) in 2008 at the University of Johannesburg.
After completing his articles at the audit firm, Deloitte in 1992, he joined the Department of Accountancy of the University of the Free State as a senior lecturer and was promoted to associate professor in 1994. In 1995, he joined
the Department of Accountancy at RAU (now the University of Johannesburg) as professor and head of the auditing section, a position he holds until today.
He is also the head of the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg.
Qualifying as a chartered accountant (CA) in 1989, Ben obtained an overall 3rd place in the Qualifying Examination. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Certified Accountants in the United Kingdom (FCCA), a Chartered Director (CD) of the Institute of Directors, a member of the Independent
Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA), a member of the Association of Black Chartered Accountants of South Africa (ABASA) and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries.
Ben has extensive practical and commercial experience, ranging from consulting on various governance and technical aspects to directly interacting with business. He has also served as a director and audit committee member of listed and non-listed companies in various industries for over 15 years.
His field of expertise includes serving as audit committee chairman and trustee of medical aid pension funds as well as public sector entities.

Fenni Nghikevali serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia. She joined the
Institute in February 2020 as the Professional Development Executive until her appointment as the first black female CEO of
the Institute in January 2023. She is a registered Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of
Namibia, a Registered Accountant and Auditor with the Public Accountants’ and Auditors’ Board, and a member of the
Namibia Institute of Corporate Governance. Fenni’s collective industry experience in various management and leadership
roles both in the private and public sectors, as well as her previous tenure at the regulatory oversight body of public
accountants and auditors in Namibia (Public Accountants’ and Auditor’s Board), enabled her to gain deeper insights into the
accounting and auditing profession.
With over 12 years of management and leadership experience in various industries, Fenni has experience working with board
members, executives, management as well as employees at all levels in the organization. Fenni currently serves on various
Boards and Committees on a local and regional scale.
With an underlying passion for professional development and human capital management, Fenni has obtained a Certificate in
Human Resource Management from the University of Cape Town. As part of her social responsibility, Fenni offers mentorship
to young adults and delivers motivational talks on various platforms.
