Abstract

A critical component in the professional skill set is an ability to 'act ethically'. However, the formal ethical training of actuaries, for example, is severely lacking. To begin to address this gap, we introduced a short module on applied ethics in the BCom Honours in Actuarial Science degree for the first time this year. The module was specifically tailored for actuarial professionals. The seminar talk will cover some of the key points from the course. It provides a model for applied ethics and touches on some of the key normative ethical frameworks. This provides a good foundation for the lifelong learning and application of critical thinking about ethical issues in professional life. It translates well to personal life too, such that we become more aware of our moral judgements, and those of others, moving from intuition to critical thinking.
