Following this lecture you will understand:
- Basic triage practices and why triage may be necessary in the primary care setting
- Initial triage assessment, including review of primary and secondary survey
- Point-of-care diagnostics and their usefulness in the initial assessment
- Definition of the emergent versus urgent patient and how the approach to their care may differ for the primary care clinician
- Basic stabilization of the emergency patient
- Recognizing when patients should be referred to the Emergency Room for additional care
- Strategies for working with the Emergency Room staff to facilitate successful patient transfer
