BIO Africa Convention provides a platform for dialogue and discussion with stakeholders in the global biotechnology environment. It is designed to showcase Africa's biotechnology innovations in the health, agriculture, and industrial sectors to the global world and brings the global world to explore investments, collaborations, and partnerships with the African biotech business leaders, entrepreneurs, researchers, regulatory authorities, and policymakers.


The BIO Africa Convention is driven in partnership with local and global governments, industry bodies, investment agencies, and research institutions. The annual BIO Africa Convention will be held at the Durban International Convention Center (ICC), also known as Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC, in South Africa.

The theme for the 2023 Convention is, Re-imagining Biotechnology Innovation for Africa's Development and Security.


The Program envisages several activities:

  • Invited Start-Ups will get an opportunity to exhibit their business at the main Exhibition Hall
  • The top 10 Start-Ups will get an opportunity to pitch their business at the BIO Africa Convention
  • A Bio-entrepreneurship bootcamps, where Start-Up founders will be exposed to high quality academic and training instructions by experts on innovation, fund raising, product development and clinical research for product development. This will be on site, but the Program will be activated on-line, and continue post the Conference.
  • ICGEB to deliver a Technology Transfer and IP Training by using out of patent technologies for simple but still imported products such as lateral flow diagnostics devices.
  • A Seminar (hybrid) will be held on Diversity in Clinical Trials. This is part of a series that BIO AFRICA has been holding in partnership with Amgen. Several key Panelists from the past Webinars will be in attendance, as part of the Boot Camp and Judging Panel.
  • The Launch of the Call for Start-Ups includes an invitation for them to submit a Pitch, that will be judged by an Expert Panel. The initial Phase will be done virtually, with a Shortlist of 10 expected to do formal Pitches at the Conference. All the top Start Ups will be sponsored to travel to the Conference, with the BIO Africa Organisors covering all on the ground costs.
