Based on the 2021 WHO statistics, an estimated 400 000 children and adolescents of 0-19 years old develop cancer. In high-income countries, where comprehensive services are generally accessible, more than 80% of children with cancer are cured. In low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), less than 30% are cured. Lack of diagnosis, misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis, abandonment of treatment are the common causes that can impact the treatment outcome of childhood cancers. Unfortunately, childhood cancer cannot generally be prevented or identified through screening.
In this webinar, common types of childhood cancers, how they are different from adult cancers, treatment options and long-term care will be shared by the speakers from Sunway Medical Centre. Most childhood cancers can be cured with generic medicines and other forms of treatment, including surgery and radiotherapy. A good ecosystem of care and support needs to be built to minimize possible relapse of childhood cancers. At the same time, common types of adult cancers, treatment options and bone marrow transplant will also be expounded by the speakers.
Overall the webinar aims to provide a general understanding of childhood cancers and a glimpse of adult cancers to better equip parents and the larger community in combating cancers. Cancer is not the end, with right diagnosis, customized treatment and proper follow-up care, cancers can be beaten.
