Event Details

East Java is the second largest Province of Indonesia by population. The capital city of Surabaya is the second largest city, a major industrial and business centre. Many British businesses domiciled in Indonesia have thriving branch operations across services and manufacturing. It's ports are a hub for domestic and international trade. East Java promotes its strategic location as a gateway to East Indonesia and the AEC. Surabaya is designated the supply city for the country's new capital.

In this webinar, we invite East Java Deputy Governor Emil Dardak to set out the vision and ambition of a Province keen to build on its trade and investment relationship with the UK. Joining the panel is Her Majesty's Trade Commissioner Natalie Black and Difi Ahmad Johansyah, representing the Bank Indonesia Investor Relations Unit.

Emil Elestianto Dardak is the Vice Governor of East Java. Before becoming Vice Governor, he was the regent of Trenggalek Regency between 2016 and 2019.

Emil studied at Singapore's Raffles Institution and later for his undergraduate degree at the University of New South Wales and eventually graduated with master’s and doctorate degrees in Economy from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. He also took up a master’s degree programme in Major Programme Management in the University of Oxford, which he completed in 2016. In addition, he participated in the 2018 class of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, being the only Indonesian between the 40 mayors involved.

By 2012, Emil had been appointed as executive vice president of the state-owned company PT Penjaminan Infrastruktur Indonesia. Previously in 2010, he was the President Director (Ad Interim) of PT Indonesia Infrastructure Finance.

After being regent, Emil attempted to diversify the economy of Trenggalek, promoting tourism and encouraging investment programs in the area - which typically sees less investors than regencies in northern Java. During his period as regent, he has won numerous achievements, such as The Best Regent for the category of Economic Development in the Sindo Weekly Government Award 2017 and the Anugerah Parahita Ekapraya Tingkat Madya Year 2016 by the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.

DIFI AHMAD JOHANSYAH, known as Chief Difi, is the Head of Bank Indonesia East Java Representative office since January 2017 until the present. On his academic background, in addition to carrying out his studies in ITB Industrial Engineering (1981 – 1986), Difi continued with his graduate studies and received an MBA at the University of Pennsylvania, USA (1994 – 1996).

Difi dedicated his career in the central bank for almost 30 years until this day. During his long journey in Bank Indonesia, Difi has pursued his career in various sectors in the central bank. The path began when Difi was assigned as a credit analyst, followed by his appointment as a staff of Bank Indonesia Governor, Sudrajad Djiwandono.

Difi has a diverse knowledge of central banking with his experience in wide ranging areas such as the monetary sector, banking supervision and financial system stability, currency circulation, and central bank communication. One of his profound achievements is the awareness building of the Indonesia public at large on how to recognize the authenticity of rupiah, widely known as 3D (Dilihat, Diraba, Diterawang).
