The BLCC is always happy to shine the spotlight on inspirational people, especially when they are from Belgium or Luxembourg!
Please visit this dinner event in large numbers because the person we found has a great story to tell: Dr. Kristof Crolla is a Belgian architect active in Hong Kong & the region. He runs his own architectural practice (LEAD) & is a tenure Associate Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, School of Architecture (CUHK). Dr. Crolla worked for many years for Zaha Hadid Architects, London and moved to HK in 2010.
His specialism & passion lies in applying digital design in architecture; he makes a case for not only including the design & engineering requirements in a digital design, but also the requirements, limitations & characteristics of the actual physical construction site.
By including these extra parameters such as onsite means, skills of the laborers, budget & time, a computational design model can be created to be much better prepared for the construction phase and therefore build smarter.
As a proof of concept Dr. Crolla produced 'Golden Moon' in 2010 and 'ZCB Bamboo Pavilion' in 2015, both in Hong Kong. The pictures you are seeing on this event website or of these projects. Beautiful in their appearance & brilliant in their design, both structures are products of computational design and built using local laborers. Thanks to the preparations done digitally, the construction time was short & didn't require additional training for the laborers.
