James Cook University and Townsville Enterprise proudly present:

Dr Chris Greig, from Princeton University, for a once in a lifetime talk about the world's energy transition.

Dr Greig, one of the lead authors of the Princeton University's ground-breaking Net-Zero America report, will be in Townsville for a highly anticipated session on Navigating Australia's transition to a net-zero emissions economy: Opportunities and challenges for Northern Australia

Australia, and its most important trading partners, are among more than 130 countries that have now committed to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by around the middle of the century. This presents a once-in-a century opportunity for Townsville and North Queensland.

The net-zero journey will require the mobilization of capital, infrastructure, and skills at a speed and scale that is unprecedented in human history. Impacts on natural resources and landscapes will be immense. Navigating the transition will demand a return to visionary, nation-building government leadership that has largely been absent in Australia and most OECD countries for the past three decades. Coordination will be crucial, calling for deep collaboration with, and among, the private sector. Finally, success will ultimately depend on our capacity to establish a new social compact involving government, industry, communities, Traditional Owners and landowners, to establish and maintain enduring trust and support for the transition.

Dr Chris Greig is the Theodora D. '78 and William H. Walton III '74 Senior Research Scientist at Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, with significant experience in the energy and resources sectors, including as CEO of ZeroGen, Chairman of the Energy Policy Institute of Australia, Deputy Chairman of Gladstone Ports Corporation, and as Non-Executive Director of two ASX listed engineering companies. A fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Chris' research interests cover energy transitions, large scale carbon capture and storage, industry decarbonization and megaproject investments. He also teaches about climate change and energy transitions as transitional security risks for Senior Management at the US Department of Defence.

This talk, from one of the lead authors of Princeton University's ground-breaking Net-Zero America report in 2020 and more recently the Net Zero Australia study, in collaboration with the Universities of Melbourne and Queensland along with Nous Group, will lay out these opportunities and challenges, and discuss what they might mean for North Queensland.
