Topic: Grit, Determination and Overcoming Adversity
Jamie Marais, a South African adventure athlete, author and speaker has made history by becoming the first and only known person to speed-summit Cape Town's iconic Table Mountain twenty-two times in twenty-eight hours over two days. Climbing over sixteen thousand vertical meters - more than twice the height of Everest - his mission was to inspire people to realise that nothing they are facing is too big to overcome.
Jamie is also the only known person to ride a mountain bike for thirty-six hours in the Kariega big five game reserve to raise support for the anti-poaching unit, who are the guardians of the critically endangered rhinos. Enduring freezing conditions and the threat of dangerous wildlife, Jamie endured extreme conditions through the night to cover three-hundred and forty kilometres with over nine thousand meters of climbing in 36 hrs.
These form part of an ongoing series of solo extreme endurance challenges, each taking place in a dangerous setting with intensely challenging physical objectives and natural threats including unpredictable weather, brutal mountain passes and dangerous wildlife.
Jamie believes that 'the body follows where the mind leads' and inspires people to believe in themselves through keynote talks on perseverance, overcoming adversity and the life-changing power of sport. His Autobiography entitled "Determination" tells the story of his personal transformation and the secrets to accessing superhuman strength.
He is the South African ambassador for Global Conservation Force who specialise in training anti- poaching units in South Africa and has now published his second book entitled Riding for Rhinos.
Jamie is currently preparing to race the Absa Cape Epic in which he and his partner are aiming for a top 10 finish in their category.
