Our clinical competence depends not only on our knowledge, problem solving abilities, and the physical examination but also on our skills for communicating with patients. Communication is a core clinical skill that needs to be learned and our clinical outcomes depend as much on what we say, as on the way we say it. This experiential workshop aims to improve the specific skills necessary to ensure an accurate, effective and supportive consultation with patients. The course is strongly based on a large body of evidence supporting certain specific communication skills in health care consultations. An added benefit is that communication skills training has also been shown to increase clinician satisfaction and reduce burnout.
