The 2-day course aims to enable healthcare professionals to approach acute or chronic pain conditions in a systematic and effective way to design an appropriate, comprehensive assessment, use and select evidence-based assessment techniques and strategies to generate a mechanism-based hypothesis and inform effective treatment planning. Participants will be introduced to clinical reasoning considerations related to assessment, a variety of assessment frameworks, self-report questionnaires and assessment techniques.


By the end of this module participants will be able to reliably demonstrate:

  • An understanding of the range of assessment tools and techniques available and necessary to perform a comprehensive assessment of a person with pain.
  • Will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills of the clinical reasoning required to select and administer appropriate assessment tools.
  • An understanding of the ethical considerations involved in the assessment of a person with pain.
  • Will be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills to use assessment findings to negotiate and agree a treatment plan.
