Dr. Dwayne Alleyne is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He currently resides in Columbia, SC and is a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physiology from Michigan State University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Adelphi University and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Alleyne has been in the field of nursing for over 20 years, 12 of them as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at Prisma Health and the Columbia VA Health Care System. He is the co-founder and current Executive Director of the non profit organization Capitol Nurse Practitioner Group which is one of the largest networking NP groups in the state of South Carolina.

Born and raised in the city of Baltimore, MD, Rashaan is a dynamic professional with a unique blend of expertise in the art and science of nursing. Holding a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Morgan State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Coppin State University, Rashaan has bridged the realms of science and healthcare. On the brink of completing the Doctor of Nursing Practice (BSN to DNP) program at Coppin State University, Rashaan is poised to emerge as a Doctorly prepared Family Nurse Practitioner in May 2024, equipped with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience across diverse healthcare settings. With a rich background encompassing roles in oncology, urgent care, emergency medicine, and intensive care, Rashaan brings a multifaceted perspective to the table.

A dedicated member of esteemed professional organizations such as DNP’s of Color, The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Nurses Association, and Maryland Nurses Association, Rashaan is deeply committed to advancing the nursing profession and advocating for patient-centered care. Beyond the clinical realm, Rashaan serves as member of the Health and Nursing Ministry at New Psalmist Baptist Church and oversees the Training Department for the Southern Maryland Region of Patient First, where he plays a pivotal role in ensuring the highest standards of training and development across 12 urgent care centers. In his research endeavors, Rashaan focuses on understanding African-American male primary care-seeking behaviors, aiming to address disparities and improve healthcare outcomes within this demographic. With his unwavering dedication and diverse skill set, Rashaan aspires to make a profound impact both within the healthcare community and beyond.

Dr. Ragan Johnson is an Associate Clinical Professor at Duke University School of Nursing. Dr. Johnson is a proud HBCU alum, receiving her BSN from Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN. She obtained her MSN as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice with public health specialty from The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN. She has had a significant impact in developing and collaborating in scholarship activities aimed at reducing health disparities. As a master clinician and educator with a public health focus, her scholarship addresses sexual health promotion and prevention of sexually transmitted infections/diseases, specifically HIV, in Black communities. She has served as the Principal Investigator of a community and internal university grant that addressed HIV prevention among Black male adolescents using barbers and barbershops as venues of health information exchange in Memphis, TN. Upon relocating to Durham, NC, Dr. Johnson has continued this work with Dr. Schenita Randolph, expanding to Black women and biomedical prevention of HIV with PrEP. Dr. Johnson has a strong passion for bias and racist-free nursing education as well. As an FNP educator, she has provided training on developing antiracist curricula for NP students, preceptors, and educators.
She is committed to marginalized communities and eliminating health inequity and racism in health care and health care education.

Dr. Julius Johnson was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY in the Brownsville and Crown Heights neighborhoods. He attended Clara Barton High School for health professionals while starring in football for the Brooklyn Skyhawks. He received his bachelors of science, with a major in nursing from Binghamton University in 2005 and received his masters of science with a major in family nurse practitioner from Binghamton University in 2009, and his Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Miami in 2016.
He currently specializes in home based primary care, transitional care, and transformational community intervention projects. He has spent the past 13 years serving underserved communities and reducing hospital rates for at risk populations. He is a founding member of the Greater New York City Black Nurses Association, past president, and currently serves as the immediate past president and on the national board of directors.
He is also the founding president of the Omega Nu chapter of Sigma Theta Tau international honor society at Long Island University Brooklyn. He serves as an associate professor, chair of faculty affairs, and the director of the family nurse practitioner at Long Island University – Brooklyn’s school of nursing.
In 2018, he was recognized as one of the National Black Nurses Association’s 40 under 40 rising stars. In 2021 he awarded the Trailblazer in nursing award by the National Black Nurses Association. In his spare time he serves as the defensive coordinator of the Brooklyn Skyhawks who are the current back to back 12 & under defending champions of the New York City youth football league.
In 2022, Dr. Johnson was inducted as a fellow into the American Association of Nurse Practitioners
Dr. Johnson served as an Associate professor, director of family nurse practitioner program, and chair of faculty affairs. Currently he is an associate professor at NYU Rory Meyers School of Nursing.

Plenary: Barbershop Health Talks: Nurses Building Interprofessional Patient Education (In Style)

Aron King, MS, RN, is a registered nurse with experience in both cardiac
telemetry and medical intensive care units. He is currently an Assistant
Manager at UC Davis Health. Aron received his Bachelor of Science in
Nursing from the University of Texas, Arlington and Master of Science
from University of California, Davis. His graduate research focus was on
prevalence of microaggressions and the impact on satisfaction and
symptoms of depression in graduate nursing students of color. Aron is
the co-author of a book entitled “The Diaries of a Resilient Black Nurse:
An Anthology of Struggles and Achievements of Black Nurses in
America”. He currently serves as the Executive Board Member for
Capitol City Black Nurses Association, a local chapter of the National
Black Nurses Association, and the Health Committee Co-Chair for the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
Sacramento. As a nurse leader, his goal is to increase diversity in the
nursing workforce through outreach particularly in Hispanic and Black
communities.

Jose Perpignan, Jr. brings more than 13 years of healthcare and patient
advocacy experience. He currently holds a Bachelor of Science in
Nursing from the University of Rochester and is on schedule to receive
his MS in nursing in 2024, as well as a DNP in nursing in 2026.
A native of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Mr. Perpignan’s mission of community caring was established in the first
grade when his father, an emergency medical technician, brought an ambulance to the school’s career day. As
an Intensive Care Unit registered nurse who swiftly reacts in emergency situations, Mr. Perpignan Jr. adds value
by advocating for patients' needs and ensuring they receive appropriate care, while providing emotional support
to patients' families. He has served as an RN in the SICU/MICU, Cardio-Thoracic ICU, and contributed in the role
of transplant coordinator.
As a co-founder of the Greater New York City Black Nurses Association, Mr. Perpignan Jr. honors his commitment
to providing needed resources to underserved communities that lack access to adequate medical services, or
are unfamiliar or distrustful of the healthcare environment. He has delivered impact by helping to build trust
with local hospitals and within the healthcare system. Mr. Perpginan Jr. also gives back as a mentor to children,
going back into communities to uplift those who do not have role models to emulate.
Mr. Perpignan, Jr. has received numerous awards and accolades for his dedication to the profession, including
winning the Live’s Healthcare Hero $100,000 Giveaway sponsored by Live with Kelly and Ryan and SoFi, in
recognition of his work on the front lines and his commitment to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He was pleasantly surprised to discover that he won the award while live on air with Kelly Ripa and Ryan
Seacrest, learning he’d won the award out of thousands of nominations.

Mr. Perpignan Jr. has held leadership roles with the National Black Nurses Association and American Association
of Colleges of Nursing. He has also served extensively as a speaker, panelist, and poster
presenter throughout his career and is a member of the Kappa Nu chapter of Omega Psi Phi
Fraternity, Inc.

Carter Todd is Nurse Manager and the founder & immediate past President of the Capitol City Black Nurses Association (CCBNA), the local chapter of the National Black Nurses Association. His route into the nursing profession has taken him through all levels of the California education system. Carter is a graduate of Sacramento State University, obtained his BSN with Samuel Meritt University, pursued graduate studies at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, and recently received his MBA with Western Governors University. He enjoys community organizing, health care educational projects, and spreading all the amazing benefits that nursing has to offer. He is a recent recipient of the Sacramento Business Journals 40 Under 40 Award, the Association of California Nurse Leaders Emerging Leaders Award, and the National Black Nurses Association 40 Under 40 Award. Engaging with community partners throughout California, Carter focuses on health education and nursing professional development as avenues of impact. Carter was also part of the Inaugural class of the American Nurses Association\California’s Advocacy Fellowship in 2021.

Michael Williams (He/Him/His) is a board-certified Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
As a bilingual (English, Spanish) APRN who has specialized in Internal Medicine, he has had the opportunity to provide care for a culturally diverse and medically complex patient population for over four years at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FHQC). He has a great deal of experience in caring for patients from various socioe-conomic levels and communities.
Michael credits his love for medicine to growing up in New York City and to his parents, who are from Panama. His upbringing exposed him to many of the healthcare challenges and obstacles to care first-hand. Being of Panamanian descent allowed him to see the importance of understanding culture and its impact on delivering care. These experiences led to seeking and ultimately obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing ‘09 and Master’s of Science in Nursing‘16 at the University of Tampa. While developing his clinical practice as a provider, he has focused on his development as an educator in the nursing profession as well. Michael served as a clinical instructor at Yale University for three years and is currently teaching at Texas State University. Along with teaching, Michael recognizes the importance of obtaining advanced education and as a first-generation college graduate himself, he initiated an endowment scholarship for first-generation college students at his alma mater.
Michael believes community care is essential to the advancement of society. The philosophy that guides his practice is to provide the highest level of care through meaningful and collaborative relationships with patients and all members of the community. Community engagement is important and he actively participates in various events; i.e. panelist on health- related topics, 5k runs, health fair, etc. He has also authored peer-reviewed poems related to social issues in the community. Michael firmly believes improving healthcare outcomes begins with educating and empowering the community that he serves.
