Joint European Commission and European Parliament Commemoration of the European Day for the Abolition of the Slave Trade - 5 December 2023

People of African descent are integral to the European Union's commitment to human dignity, rights, non-discrimination, and sustainable development. The consistent patterns of racial discrimination towards them are not accidental. As the EU anti-racism action plan (2020-2025) states, "prejudices and stereotypes can, firstly, be addressed by acknowledging the historical roots of racism. Colonialism, slavery and the Holocaust are embedded in our history and have profound consequences for society today."

In this perspective, the European Commission and the European Parliament will organise a joint commemoration of the European Day for the Abolition of the Slave Trade.

There is a dinner on the 4th of December (19:00-21:30), followed by an all-day event on the 5th of December (10:00-17:00), in the Parliament premises, in Brussels.

The outcome of the commemoration is the drafting of a European Parliament Resolution on Reparatory Justice.

ENAR is supporting the development of this event and will cover the costs for travel and accommodation for 10 ENAR members. We will operate on first come, first serve basis.
