This year for International Women's Day, we invite experts from the UK, Sweden and Indonesia to share their insights and experiences on how women in leadership roles can contribute to faster economic growth. As we look to the future, sustainable and equal economic recovery is only possible if it is a feminist recovery — one that puts progress for girls and women at its center.

Owen Jenkins is the British Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste. He took up his post in July 2019.

Before his appointment as Ambassador, Owen was the British Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, responsible for engaging at the highest levels in the region and internationally on issues such as the Afghan peace process, cooperation on counter-terrorism and bilateral relations. He was also the Director at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) responsible for South Asia and Afghanistan, covering Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan. This involved overseeing all of the UK’s diplomatic engagement in the region, including responsibility for over 3000 staff and an operational budget of £120M+.

A career diplomat, Owen joined the FCO in 1991. He has served in British missions in Turkey, Argentina, Brussels (at the UK’s representation to the EU) and India, where he was based at the UK government’s development arm, DFID. He has worked on diverse issues, from the Balkan wars of the 1990s to climate change and economics, with a consistent interest in international security, emerging markets and the links between prosperity and sustainability.

Outside work, Owen enjoys reading almost anything (but particularly novels, popular science and history), outdoor pursuits, including climbing and sailing (at both of which he is rapidly being outclassed by his three children) and travelling. As a north Londoner, he supports Arsenal.

Bapak Hariyadi Sukamdani, Chairman, Employers’ Association (APINDO). He has been at the helm of a number different companies and presently is Chairman for Indonesian Hotel & Restaurant Association (PHRI), President Director at PT Hotel Sahid Jaya International Tbk and Vice President-Sahid Group. Bapak Hariyadi is also current Chairman of Visit Wonderful Indonesia, Member of Advisory board of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) and President ASEAN Confederation Employer (ACE).

Previously, he was Chairman of Indonesia Young Entrepreneur Association (HIPMI), Member of National Wage Committee, Member of National Social Security council, Secretary of Indonesia People's Consultative Assembly, and Member of National Economy and Industry Committee (KEIN).

He received a Bachelor degree in engineering from Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta, a Master in Management from University of Indonesia, and a PhD in management from University of Indonesia.

Julia Suryakusuma is a public intellectual, researcher, feminist activist and scholar, and author of several books, among others, “Sex, Power and Nation” (2004), “State Ibuism” (2011), and “Julia’s Jihad” (2013), an anthology of her columns in The Jakarta Post from 2006-2013. She continues to write her famously provocative, controversial and entertaining columns up to now.

“State Ibuism, the Social Construction of Womanhood in New Order Indonesia” is based on her MA thesis from the Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Netherlands (1988). It has been a classic for almost 35 years since it was still a thesis manuscript. The concept of State Ibuism is the only original social theory conceived of by an Indonesian scholar that has had an international and national impact. It is cited widely.

On 10 March 2021 she was awarded the Order of the Crown medal by King Philippe of Belgium for her activism and writings on democracy, human rights and gender. It is an award rarely bestowed on non-Belgian citizens, bestowed only to individuals considered to have made special achievements.

As of December 2021, Julia Suryakusuma is the director of the Gender and Democracy Center (GDC) of the Institute for Research, Education and Information on Economy and Social Affairs (LP3ES), one of Indonesia’s largest and oldest NGOs, dealing in research, education and community development, publishing, and overseas network development.
