What is EdTech?

Education Technology (EdTech) covers a wide spectrum of software, hardware and digital solutions that help deliver and manage learning in a more effective and efficient way, from early childhood education to corporate and lifelong learning. With recent advancements in mobile technologies, AI, data analytics, reality technologies, Internet of Things, robotics etc, EdTech will play an increasingly important role in enabling, motivating, empowering, customizing and democratising learning.

Until recently the rate of EdTech adoption has been very slow. But COVID-19 has thrust EdTech in the spotlight. At the peak of the pandemic, over 90% of education institutes around the world have switched to remote learning. Whilst technology cannot replace the in-person learning experience, it is set to become an increasingly part of the post-pandemic classroom.

The education sector is finally ripe for the digital disruption!

Why Invest in EdTech?

Even prior to the pandemic, the EdTech market was on a rising tide. According to global education market intelligence platform HolonIQ, EdTech expenditure was forecast to grow at 15% CAGR 2019-2025 and reach USD 400bn+ by 2025. Most investors are specialist or generalist venture capital funds. There are also a number of impact investors operating at early stages of companies' lifecycles.

Whilst he US set the trend and pace of the EdTech market, Asia has experienced the fastest growth in investment into the sector. China attracted more than half of the world's venture capital investments in education last year, and has been the biggest destination of such funds in the last five years. Apart from the traditional education sector, the market growth is also being driven by an immense need to reskill the workforce in the digital age.

The pandemic has accelerated the growth in EdTech investment in a matter of months. Based on Crunchbase data, global venture funding for EdTech companies reached $4.1 billion between January and July 2020. That is $1.5 billion more than was raised during the same period in 2019, and the highest amount raised in that time frame for the past five years. "For general investors, edtech wasn't sexy and it wasn't mainstream. Coronavirus really changed that. Everyone's had their kids at home studying. There's a lot of private capital around the world that has a new appreciation for this industry," said Patrick Brothers, Founder of HolonIQ.

The money aside, Nelson Mandela said "education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world". Are you prepared to invest in EdTech that will make this weapon even more powerful?
