The COVID-19 pandemic and the imposition of the Movement Control Order ("MCO") by the Malaysian government for the period commencing 18th March 2020 have brought about various effects on employment in Malaysia. Businesses are facing the challenges of decreased revenue, safety and health as well as managing work from home.
During this 1-hour webinar, partners of the employment practice in Skrine, Ms Selvamalar Alagaratnam and Ms Foo Siew Li, and senior associate, Ms Sara Lau Der Yin will present on the relevant laws and regulations that apply during the MCO and discuss the steps that businesses can take to deal with the effects of COVID-19 and the MCO on employment in Malaysia.

Selvamalar is co-head of the firm's Employment practice. She provides integrated support to a wide range of clients in various industries on all employment/human resource related matters including compliance with all laws applicable to employment relationships; managing the exit of employees whether by way of collective reduction in force exercises or individual terminations for misconduct or poor performance; protection of confidential and proprietary information; investigations and disciplinary actions; trade unions, both recognition and collective bargaining; dispute resolution at all levels and business immigration.
She also provides strategic advice in internal fraud management advising clients in high profile and highly sensitive matters involving fraud perpetrated by employees; and the options available to the organisations to obtain redress against the wrongdoers.
Her practice also extends to focused compliance on bribery and corruption as well as acting for medical practitioners in negligence and malpractice suits.
Siew Li is a member of the Maritime and Shipping practice group in the firm. She has acted and advised local and international clients in ship arrests, charterparty disputes, cargo claims, andenforcement of ship mortgages.
Her other area of expertise is in employment law and she specialises in both contentious and non-contentious employment law issues. Siew Li regularly advises companies on all aspects of employment such as work permits requirements, drafting of contracts of employment and human resource policies and procedures, performance management, disciplinary action, restructuring and retrenchment exercises and voluntary separation schemes.
She also regularly advises corporations on employment issues in mergers and acquisitions. She is also involved in general commercial litigation. Siew Li is also a regular contributor to law publications and often speaks at law events and conducts talks and trainings for clients.
Sara is a senior associate in the firm’s Employment practice. She acts in both employment disputes and also advises on corporate employment matters. She has experience in all levels of courts in Malaysia, including the Industrial Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court.
She is also very experienced in immigration employment work, including the employment of expatriates and foreign workers in Malaysia.
Her other areas of practice include maritime and shipping, civil and commercial law, and medical negligence.
Balamurali is an associate in the employment and shipping practice.
