There is a significant relationship between animal cruelty and other violence, including organized crime, human trafficking, gangs, and child/domestic abuse. Victims of intimate partner violence will often refuse to leave their abusers out of fear that their pet would be harmed, and not having a safe place that will shelter them both. Thanks to a new Pennsylvania law, the courts now have the ability to expand protection orders through temporary ownership and refrains and enhances legal consequences for violations. Application of this new law will provide law enforcement and district attorneys additional tools to help victims seek safety and to prevent future violence.
