This webinar looks at issues related to environmental ethics and integrity in the practice of Integrated Environmental Management. The objective of the webinar is to provide a framework for mindful and ethical decision-making and the consequences of its absence.

The presentation will include:

· The importance of ethics in Integrated Environmental Management,

· A review of Section 24 of the Constitution and NEMA,

· A real-world case law dealing with examples of ethics in EAPs and where EIA processes have resulted in criminal cases with EAPs involved

· What to do when you spot an environmental violation, and

· Sharing the experiences of being environmental lawyers, and working in the public interest sector


This Event is targeted at the new Young Professional Membership Group. Places are limited. Therefore any member registering and failing to attend for whatever reason will be charged a R200 no show fee. Respectfully, if you are not going to attend please do not obstruct the opportunity for others.

    Danjelle joined the Centre For Environmental Rights in 2019 as the Environmental Law Specialist. Her duties cut across the CER’s various programmes and include legal research and drafting, training and empowerment, monitoring and knowledge dissemination as well as parliamentary liaison.
    Danjelle holds a BMus (Jazz Composition), an LLB and an LLM (Environmental Law) from the University of Cape Town. Her Masters dissertation was on biodiversity offsets in South African environmental law. As part of her LLM, Danjelle spent a semester at the University of Maryland in Baltimore (USA).
    Danjelle completed her articles in 2016 at Cullinan & Associates Inc, a specialist environmental law firm in Cape Town. As an associate attorney, Danjelle was very involved in litigation representing AmaPondo communities in the Wild Coast opposing the construction of a highway through the communities’ lands.
    Danjelle has experience in the water, waste, air quality, biodiversity and coastal sectors as well as customary and administrative law. She is passionate about environmental justice and the realisation of the Constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to health or well-being.
    In her spare time, Danjelle plays in a jazz band called The Lady Day Big Band which is South Africa’s first all-female big band. Danjelle also enjoys being in nature, especially through hiking and trail running. She loves animals and the ocean and would one day like to be able to grow all her own veggies in a garden.

    Zara joined the Centre as a Candidate Attorney in 2017. She completed her LLB at the University of Cape Town before attending the School for Legal Practice. While at university, Zahra volunteered at the UCT Refugee Rights Unit, which invigorated her interest in public interest law. With her love for the environment and passion for human rights, Zahra hopes to further the Centre’s mission to advance the realisation of environmental rights. She also loves painting, travelling and learning new languages.

    Faeeza Fortune

    Ms/NEC Student Rep at Stellenbosch University

    Faeeza is a PhD candidate at the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University. She holds an MA in wetland dynamics and remote sensing from UWC. Her current research focuses on understanding the fluvial morphodynamics of wetlands in semi-arid environments. Faeeza adopts an interdisciplinary approach to her research by combining a variety of methods in her study.
