Innovate Indonesia: Unlocking Growth Through Technological Transformation

Event Details

The recently published Innovate Indonesia report explores the critical role of technology transformation in boosting Indonesia's economic development, builds an in-depth understanding of technology and sector-specific opportunities and challenges, plots Indonesia's position in the technological transformation journey, and takes a "deep dive" into Industry 4.0 in Indonesia. It concludes by recommending five key pillars for policy action. This report has been presented to various ministries in Indonesia.

BritCham and the University of Cambridge are delighted to invite all industrial practitioners in Indonesia to learn more about the report and ultimately bring back lessons that they could implement in their businesses.

Michele Palladino is a policy analyst at Policy Links, the knowledge exchange unit of the Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (CSTI), University of Cambridge. Policy Links' mission is to develop new policy evidence, insights and tools building on the latest academic thinking and international best practice.

Michele provides expertise in industrial economics for all the projects undertaken within the Policy Link unit. He is an economist and project manager with several years of experience in the consulting sector and in the academia, both in the UK and abroad. Before joining Policy Links, he worked as a consultant economist for a leading economics and environmental consultancy based in the UK. In this role, he managed a number of projects for the UK Government and the European Commission, focusing on European policy evaluation, industry sector analysis, and chemicals regulation.

Michele has also previous consulting experience in Italy and Brazil in the field of designing, monitoring and evaluation of projects in the SMEs manufacturing and agribusiness sectors, mainly funded by international organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank and the OECD-LEED Programme. He holds a PhD in Production and Development Economics from the University of Insubria (Italy), and an MSc in Development Economics from the University of Sussex.

Carlos López-Gómez is the Head of Policy Links, IfM ECS, University of Cambridge.

Policy Links is a not-for-profit innovation consultancy unit that works with governments to develop effective industrial innovation policies. It offers consultancy and education services based on leading academic thinking, specialist technological know-how, and the analysis of the latest international policy practices.

Carlos has extensive research and consulting experience in the fields of industrial and innovation policy. He has advised several national and regional governments as well as international organisations including UNIDO, OECD, ADB, UNCTAD and the World Economic Forum. Carlos started his career with quality control and automation engineering roles at Toyota and General Electric. In 2015, he was seconded at Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and was a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo.

Carlos holds a PhD in industrial and innovation policy from the University of Cambridge, and is member of both Downing and Churchill Colleges.

Haslam Preeston was appointed Jardine Group's Head of Digital Business in June 2019. Based in Singapore, he is responsible for developing the Group's digital and innovation strategy and the implementation of programmes to support digital transformation and growth strategies across the Group. Following an early career in the British army, Mr Preeston joined the Jardine Matheson Group in 2001, where he undertook roles in a number of business units including Jardine Motors and Hongkong Land, in which time he was based in Beijing, Macau, Hong Kong and Indonesia.

Prior to his current role, he was Regional Managing Director of Jardine Cycle & Carriage with responsibility for overseeing motor operations in Singapore, Malaysia, Myanmar and Indonesia (excluding those held by Astra).

Haslam is the Secretary of the British Chamber of Commerce in Singapore and was Chairman of the British Chamber in Indonesia from 2011 to 2014.

Mr Preeston has a MA in Chinese Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has also completed the General Management Programme at Harvard Business School.
