The Māori economy is predicted to grow to $100 billion by 2030, however the recent budget saw a deprioritising of initiatives that would ensure equitable access for Māori to services. The narrative coming from our political leaders is that things Māori are not important. Yet in other sectors, we are observing some businesses are holding the line to align with te ao Māori.

In this webinar, we will explore perspectives about whether Māori cultural competency is still relevant, and why?

Regan Savage is the Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at Southern Cross Health Society, having previously been their Head of Marketing & Engagement for three years. Prior to Southern Cross Regan led the Unite Against COVID-19 campaign from within the Department of PM & Cabinet, had two years at Trade Me including a year as Chief Customer Officer, and was GM of Marketing at Kiwibank. Prior to this he also worked in marketing leadership at ANZ, and also spent six years in London working for HSBC.

Regan served as a board member of the NZ Marketing Association from 2018 – 2022 and is currently a trustee and board member of Ngā Manu Nature Reserve, a sanctuary in Kāpiti focussed on education, conservation and preservation of NZ’s native flora and fauna.

Regan is a Dad to two daughters, so his spare time is focussed on supporting their love of football and other sports and social activities, as well as carving out a bit of time for fitness, trail running and a bit of tramping.

Of humble beginnings, Kirstin is of Sāmoan, Te Arawa and Waikato whakapapa. Raised by her Nan and among the people of Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei, she believes that te ao Māori (a Māori worldview) and tūpuna (ancestral) wisdom has the ability to build nations and nationhood. Layered upon this, Kirstin is passionate about enabling the Private sector to lean into its role as responsible corporate citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand, by growing awareness and understanding of its relationship with te ao Māori.

In her role as Pou Ārahi (Head of Māori Strategy) for Rangiata, Sky Television Kirstin is accountable for the development and implementation of the company’s inaugural Māori strategy, including the appropriate and authentic execution of te reo and tikanga Māori across the business. In April 2024, Rangiata was honoured to be awarded Ngā Tohu Reo Māori – Pakihi for its efforts to enhance te reo Māori across the Rugby World Cup aligned to Kia Rere, Sky’s Māori strategy. Prior to this, Kirstin served as the Director of Learner Wellbeing & Support Services at Te Pūkenga, and as the Head of Māori Development at One New Zealand.

Born and raised in the Tāmaki community, Kirstin now lives in Te Wao Nui a Tiriwa (Massey) with her husband and teenage daughter (the youngest of six children). Kirstin holds a Post-Graduate Business Diploma in Māori Development from the University of Auckland and has served on multiple Not-For-Profit Boards including Ngā Aho Whakaari – Māori in Screen, Te Rourou - One Aotearoa Foundation, and many school Boards following her children through their education.

Currently enrolled in the Master of Change & Organisational Resilience with academyEX, Kirstin is focused on building her knowledge, practice and networks in the area of Governance to enable equitable access for Māori and under-served communities to resources and opportunities through all levels of society.
