Lecture 1
Presenter: Bill McMenamin, P.E., PTOE
Director of Transportation Services for GPI's Babylon and Manhattan offices
Topic: Roadside Barrier Design: Pitfalls to Protecting the Hazard
The primary focus of this presentation will be a discussion related to some of the lesser-known design considerations regarding guiderail installation such as zones of intrusion, restrictions in accommodating subsurface obstructions and utility conflicts, guidance regarding curb & guiderail combinations, and the dangers of trying to retrofit guiderail to mitigate roadside hazards where other protective measures were already in place. Initial presentation slides will provide a general overview of guiderail design – typical rail types (w-beam, thrie beam, cable, etc.), standard guidelines for the use of guiderail as outlined in industry publications, identifying potential roadside hazards, and methodologies for providing adequate protection for such hazards. These issues will be presented through exhibits taken from the Roadside Design Guide, the New York and New Jersey Highway Design Manuals, and recent project experience.
Lecture 2
Presenter: Christopher D 'Antonio, P.E.
Principle Planner for Suffolk County Department of Economic Development
Topic: Suffolk County Updates on Reimagine Transit and its Hike and Bike Master Plan
This presentation will provide a two-part update on the County's ongoing work to implement the County Executive's Connect Long Island Plan. Part I will focus on the redesign of Suffolk County Transit's fixed route bus network, delving into the process and its ultimate result in the proposal of a final new transit network which dramatically expands access by coordinating transfers and routes, increasing service frequency, extending service hours, and eliminating route loops, diversions, and duplicative services. Part II will expand upon the ongoing work to implement the recommendations of the County's Hike and Bike Master Plan completed in March 2020, exploring several exciting initiatives to advance recommended project corridors to conceptual design and providing highlights of some notable hike and bike project milestones.
