COVID-19 has brought about an unprecedented change in transportation. In the span of a few short months, bustling metropolises came to a grinding halt as world governments sought to stem the spread of the coronavirus. Now eight months since the initial wave of shutdowns in the U.S., cities like New York City are moving towards the goal of gradually reopening, but what have we learned?
Mobility patterns and choices have undoubtedly changed as we adapted to new policies and regulations. How will this influence transportation planning and design practices in the future?

It will discuss the principle deployment of ITS communication backbone and discuss the city wide wireless deployment and it benefits on the ITS projects in city mobility and safety. Also it discuss the connected vehicle deployment in New York City and current status, future impact and the data collection analysis to support performance measures.

The fast evolving COVID-19 pandemic has drastically reshaped urban mobility patterns. Timely understanding of the effects of this extreme event is expected to help decision makers and planners to better prepare for similar future events. This presentation will focus on the discussion of on-going and future COVID-19 related research efforts being conducted by NYU’s C2SMART transportation center. The use of big data obtained from various innovative sources for understanding the relationship between social distancing and urban mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic, emerging trends of urban mobility amid the pandemic, and the impact of the length of policy lag mainly due to the people’s varying reaction to a specific policy and its timing will be presented. Various AI and machine learning techniques used to process and analyze related data will be also be briefly discussed.

Diniece Mendes, a certified Engineer in Training, is the Director of Freight Mobility at the New York City Department of Transportation. She has 8 years of progressive experience leading, streamlining, assessing, and implementing large-scale transportation planning and performance systems across the Greater New York City area. Currently, Diniece oversees a multi-million dollar program to advance policies and initiatives that reduce the adverse impacts of trucks on infrastructure and communities while improving safety, truck delivery efficiency, and New York City’s economic competitiveness. Diniece has spearheaded the development of the NYC's forthcoming comprehensive freight plan, a blueprint for enhanced freight management that is safe, sustainable, equitable, and efficient. Diniece graduated from the City College of New York with a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering in 2012. She later earned a Master of Science in Civil Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 2013. Diniece is actively involved in the Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of ASCE where she oversees the Planning and Development Council and a new T&DI Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion effort. Locally, she serves as the City College of New York Engineering School Alumni President and is extremely passionate about building connections with CCNY engineering students, faculty, and alumni. Diniece lives in Brooklyn with her husband, loves to travel, entertain, and enjoys rich cultural experiences.

Dr. Talas bring long standing career experience in traffic engineering and continue with over 30 years in Traffic Engineering and Operation experience in New York City Department of Transportation. He currently serves as the Director for the NYC Department of Transportation System Engineering, ITS project Management, where he supervises the Intelligent Transportation System projects and initiatives in New York City. These projects include the management of the New York City Traffic Computerization System at the Traffic Management Center modernizing and operating over 13,000 signals and the currently deployed Active Traffic Management System systems and implementation citywide. In the last three years he is leading the NYC Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment project management.
Dr. Talas is also an Adjunct Professor at NYU –Tandon School Of Engineering Transportation Graduate Program.. He has earned PHD in Transportation Planning and Engineering at NYU -Poly University, Master degrees in Transportation, Planning and Engineering and master in Electrical Engineering from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and a member in the Intelligent Transportation Systems America organizations and ITE and a member of Intelligent Transportation Systems Advance Transportation Controller National Standards.

His research interests in transportation cover a wide range of topics including data analytics for advanced technology and sensing applications in smart cities, development of simulation models of large scale complex transportation systems, modeling and evaluation of traffic incident and emergency management, feedback based on-line real-time traffic control techniques, traffic safety, application of operations research techniques in network optimization and humanitarian inventory control, and transportation economics. He has co-authored 4 books and published approximately 400 refereed papers in scholarly journals and conference proceedings. Prof. Ozbay is also an Associate Editor of the ITS journal. Dr. Ozbay is the co-editor of a book titled “Dynamic Traffic Control & Guidance” published by Springer Verlag’s "Complex Social, Economic and Engineered Networks" series in 2013. Born out of a construction company, the team has spent years on job sites as Field Engineers, Project Managers, Superintendents and Surveyors - they know their way around a job-site and excel at large scale complex construction and infrastructure projects.
Enovate performs construction management services and has a research and technology division to address solutions that don’t currently exist for problems they saw in the field and experienced first hand. The in-house development team focuses on hardware and software solutions for technology applicable to your project and, with the knowledge that each effort is unique, the team operates accordingly. Also taken into account is the teams varied backgrounds which cover different industries allowing for a wider perspective.
