The energy sector has been highlighted in recent times, given its potential for having a profound impact on Myanmar's overall socio-economic development well into the future. While the recent power shortages have demonstrated the heightened unreliability of the power supply in the country, the bright side to this situation is the opportunities that accompany it. The recent MPE&VCA Myanmar PE & VC forum included discussion about the interesting opportunity that the renewable sector provides, either for an alternative power supply or as the subject of possible catalytic capital investments, associated with a risk-taking mechanism.

The energy sector is among the most favoured investment sweet spots for most of the sector-agnostic investors looking into Myanmar. However, given the current situation of uncertainty around energy supply and disruptions caused by external factors in Myanmar, it could be a while before supply continuity returns to a normal state, a World Bank representative noted at a recent discussion. Meanwhile, an opportunity arises to look at alternative sources of power supply, the representative said.

At this third panel discussion of the MPE&VCA webinar series "Leading through Crises", we will explore how the suppliers of alternative sources for the energy sector are looking at the future, how the current leaders in the energy sector are performing, and if renewable energy could gain momentum as anticipated.
