The amount of personal data that companies hold on their customers, employees, and other contacts, has grown at an exponential rate in recent years, resulting in major international legislation such as the EU's GDPR and Thailand's PDPA to prevent the misuse or such data and empower data subjects. As a result of this landmark legislation, and of the growing international popularity of similar laws and regulations, companies are more aware than ever of their compliance duties relating to personal data, and are keen to understand the requirements in the jurisdictions in which they operate.
For companies doing business in Asia's emerging markets however, the legal requirements are not always readily transparent, so to assist our members in their data compliance obligations, the Australian Chambers of Commerce in Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar have teamed up with regional Southeast Asian law firm, Tilleke & Gibbins, to provide a webinar on the data protection laws in our jurisdictions.
Featuring leading lawyers from Tilleke & Gibbins' offices in Vientiane, Phnom Penh, and Yangon, the session will comprise three sections—one per jurisdiction—each covering the legal and regulatory frameworks in each country, the definitions of and stakeholders in "personal data," the legal requirements and limitations on the collection and processing of personal data, the duties imposed upon data controllers, and the penalties for breaching local data protection laws. The webinar will be held on Tuesday, March 30, from 10:00 am onwards.
